Barbara... growing back is an understatment.. more like taking over!! They look great.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Dick it could affect Kay and Barb also, they are 1 & 2 hours north of me and about 30 minutes west so they are still in a bad place too. Usually get bad tornados north of the coast

Thanks everyone. I was killing them with kindness. I grow mainly tropicals and everything I grow likes plenty of water-except alocasia. They were dying one after the other. Tried mixing the soil with sand, didn't work. Tried perlite and sand-didn't work. I finally read the directions. LOL Went to my Aroriadian and read about where most of the alocasia are from. Low and behold, many of they grow on hillsides of limestone with a little humus on top and their roots cling down into the cracks of the rock. Now I use pumice-about 3/4 pumice and the rest is my regular soil mix, which has a lot of peat. I also throw in a handful of lime. I also put all the small plants in clear orchid pots-better drainage and I can watch the roots to watch for trouble.

Dick-we are on the east of the storm and we are in the direct path of the eye after it leaves the coast. During Camille we had 140 mile hr winds. Taking in the European hybrids in but everything else will have to make it on its own. Keeping fingers crossed that greenhouses make it.

Barb,
Thanks for sharing your mix.
I've been moving my little ones more toward an orchid mix.
I like the pumice variation and as it appears to be working............
May I ask how long they've been in this mix?

What a collage of ears. Such a picture. Oh Barb, take great care!!

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

Ric, they have been in the mix about a month and there is no more roting. I really like watching the roots. Trying to find large clear orchid pots for the larger ears.

Barbara I love that idea.
Some of the Orchid growers I know swear by the clear pots.
Where are you getting pumice?

Thanks for the info!
Ric

Ric, I am trying to find a source closer but the last purchase of pumice was from Tropiflora. 2 cu. 17.50 but shipping was 24.36. I have been all over the net looking for cheaper sources. If anyone knows of a cheaper source, I would appreciate it if you would let me know. Also, need source for the large clear pots-gallon size and 2 gallon size.

I LOVE your African Mask--sooooo huge!! That is obviously the one in Pumice?? I just bought a small one on ebay--it looks to be in regular potting soil--it says it like to be evenly moist but not wet?!! Should I repot it maybe in cactus soil mix and pumice??

Bonnie

It is less than 1'--the photo on ebay lead me to believe it would be a 2-3' plant!! hehehe Oh well!! Got it for $12.54 total--including shipping so maybe I shouldn't complain??

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I bought a huge pot of the African masks from Target for $7. :) They were in an ugly nursery pot so I bought a pretty plum one to put them in. I was shocked when I dumped the pot and noticed there was not a single drain hole!

Barb, great pictures..Ive just gotten into EEs and I was thinking that nothing could hurt them and potted them up in regular potting soil and have been watering them to death thinking they love water...they look ok but I dont have any exotic variety...black magic and black stemmed EE....should I be adding pumice to them too?....
I just love your picture...Judy

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I don't think anyone has heard from Barb since the hurricane hit. I'll be glad to hear that she is okay.

Black magic is not that picky about moisture when it is outside and getting plenty of heat and light. I grow that one IN my pond.

Muskegon, MI(Zone 5a)

I was watching the news this morning but Im not sure where the town is that Barb lives in....I never looked at where she lives when I posted this message..oh I sure hope shes ok.....Judy

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I didn't think you were being insensitive. I didn't realized until I clicked on the maps on DG, just how many people we know, that were seriously affected by this. :(

to my elephant ear friends. We made it through the storm. Will post pictures when my life returns to normal. Our house had a tree to fall on it and bounce down the side and went through the porch roof but not very deep. Lots of shingles off the roof and blown out window and many cracked windows. We had 90-110 miles per hour winds for hours. I have no shade trees left in my back yard and the trees in our neighbors yard ended up in our yard. My greenhouse with the ee in it made it but we did not have water for days and many of them suffered and I am trying to bring them back to life. All my brugs were stripped of their leaves and beat around. The hoop house that I winter the large potted brugs did not make it. With all the mess and difficulty, we count ourselves lucky.

We have a 83 and 79 year old aunt and uncle from Bay St. Louis that lost everything that and we are trying to take care of their affairs. We didn't know for days if they were alive and after being in shelters they are now in a nursing home. They only have what they were wearing and are still stunned and dazed. They are brother and sister and neither ever married and they have no children to care for them. There are so many elderly that have lost everything or were to weak and old to survive.

Barb, I am so very happy you have finally posted...Ive not been on Daves for very long but your name comes up all the time..its as if I know you....please know if there is anything I can do to help you I am here for you.......Judy

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Barb,
Again Glad you're OK!
I Hope your Aunt and Uncle pull thru.
It was bad enough for the young..........

I'm sad to hear of the damage but as you said it could have been MUCH worse.

Don't worry about the EE's and Brugs.
Them that don't make it we will replace from here on this Forum and others.

I guarantee there are more plants waiting for you than you can ever use.
Whenever you're ready they will be waiting.

Be Safe and Take care of yourself and Family.
Our thoughts are w/ you.

Barb, it is wonderful to see your post even if the news is not so great. I am so sorry to hear about your home and plants. I am glad to hear that your aunt and uncle survived the storm. I am sure at that age, it must really be awful to see everything just gone, with no real hope of working, rebuilding a future... If there is anything you need, let us know.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

I'm glad you are safe to Barb. I know you'll take good care of your Aunt & Uncle.
:) Donna
