I thought I'd show the progress of my raised beds. This is a timely post since these same beds are now in the direct path of hurricane Katrina. Of couse, if her path doesn't turn and things happen as predicted, my vines will be a thing of the past. If only hurricanes would stay over water to blow themselves out. This will be the worst storm we've had in at least 20 yrs. Unless she turns.
These pix are from July and August. Some plants did well and some not as well as planned. I am pleased with the results. Learning as I go.
raised beds pt 2
Thanks Joseph. It is awful that our good luck will always be someone else's bad luck in terms of hurricanes. I truely hate it.
The trellises are tied together and reinforced with heavy electric fence posts. They will be blown around whether they are up or laying down. I think the reinforcement is better left in place as they are...it would have to be taken apart to lay them down.
Everything looks beautiful and healthy! Great job!!

flicker...I hope the hurricane missed you!
Could you say more about how you have your arches reinforced and supported. Maybe even a photo of how you did it if you have one.
I have 2 of my arches set-up and they are not as steady as I imagined they would be. Sounds like some reinforcement is needed.
Thank-you & my very best wishes, Margie
Here you can see the arches. Each box is wide enough to fit 2 light cheap trellises ($4-8.00 from Harbor Freight). I set them in place then tied them together with electrical ties where they touched in several places. Then I drove electrical fence posts into the box beside the 3 positions where the vertical arch poles entered the soil--right , center, and left. Then tied the ele fence posts to the arches with wire or ele ties. The ele fence posts are ugly and it is best to plant something that will cover them quickly to the left and right.
These are sturdy but 75-100 mile winds will still do great damage.
(I cannot believe that I am calmly writing this. Obviously I refuse to believe it will happen.)
Johanna, I love the way your little garden looks and I hope you can move some of the stuff inside and save what you can. Even if you have to cut it almost to the pot you will still have something to start over with. I see where the storm is heading right to you and I am praying for your saftey and hope all goes well. Hopefully it will turn but at this time it sure dosen't look like it....
My best wishes and prayers go to you and your family, we will be thinking of you as all this unfolds.

I would like to bring Flicker's posts back to the top of the list. Our prayers are with you, Flicker! While your plants may not have faired very well, we certainly pray that YOU have your health and your family is safe.
Andrea
