I'm having a large fish pond dug and we have a problem. No place to take all the dirt that is being excavated. For the last three days two dump trucks have been running back and forth to a place about 3 miles from me dumping dirt but I guess that person has all they need. Today the guy running the crane asked me where I'd like all that dirt put. The DEQ said we can't pile it up by the woods (wetland area) so I have no clue. They haven't even dug down that far and we have tons and tons more dirt to come out of there. The head contractor is out of town but will be back on Monday and we'll talk. Initially, I told him he could store the dirt here until he finds a customer who wants it but I had no idea what a huge mountain of dirt we're talking about. The crane guy gave me a clue.
Any suggestions? Anyone need dirt? Come and help yourself this weekend. We're going to try to use the tractor bucket and dump it on the trails throughout the woods. It's mostly a nice hard clay so it should help build up the trails and make them less muddy in the spring I hope.
I'm in Au Gres if anyone would like to come get some dirt.

Who needs dirt?
Brenda,
Post an ad in your local paper advertising 'free fill dirt'. If you live on a well traveled road, you could even put a sign out front saying 'free fill dirt'. Lots of people are always looking for fill dirt....to fill in low spots and new construction. You just need to get the word out there that you have some to get rid of.
or
check the phone book for developers/contractors/landscape designers...and call em to ask if they want it.
or
call your township office, maybe the yard needs it.
or
ditto ad in the paper plus a big poster up at the local grocery, laundry, etc. library too. try everything! LOL
wish i had a truck.......
*GRIN*
Brenda.......Do you want me to let the members of the Tawas Bay Garden Club know about the dirt, and also my Master Gardener Assoc. group. Let me know if its ok...and I will pass the word around since its in my area. Are you up here all week????? I am guessing you will be for the Labor Day weekend....Thanks...
Deann
Hi Deann,
Yes, tell everybody I have hundreds of truckloads of dirt to get rid of. Most of it is clay though so would be used mostly for fill for low areas. I'm up all week till after Labor Day. Stop by if you get a chance. People wanting dirt cannot live in wetlands area or they have to apply to DEQ for permission first. I've had lots of people wanting dirt but they're wetlands and the excavator won't deliver and dump in wetlands area and take a chance on getting a hefty fine. My son is up and we've been moving some of it to the paths in the woods filling in low areas. It is slow going though. It is unreal how much dirt is coming out of that hole and they've hardly started. :)
Brenda
Brenda.....Holy Cow, how big a pond are you building...same size as mine? I will let my friends know. We have meetings second week in Sept. I will try to stop by this week and visit and see all the new things you have done.....what is your phone number?? I will call before I come...
Deann
Hi Deann,
The pond is supposed to be 300' x 60' and four feet deep on one end and fifteen feet deep on the other end. They're out there working on it this morning. I see them loading trucks and taking the dirt off some place but not sure where.
Come by any time. My phone number up here is 989-876-2979.
Chat later,
Brenda
Morning Brenda
They are probably selling your dirt/sand or what ever is coming out of your pond since you don't want it....A few years ago, we had a guy dig on some more of that big pond on my property that's the furthest away from my house, and he dug it free for just the sand he took out of there....worked good for both of us.....win win situation....you should ask them for giggles and laughs, "where ya all hauling that dirt"......
By the way, who is digging your pond???
Deann
hey i hear gardeners know the best dirt!!!!!
heeeheeee heeeeeeeeee!
I could use some for a 4wheeler race track-we need some jumps but will have to pass for now.
Kevin Lynch of Lynch trucking is doing the excavation. He has been selling the dirt to multiple people. Today they were hauling it out to a site on 23 where they are building a new house or something. Our friend took 30 loads about 5 miles away. He is charging $30 a load and I believe there is 15 yards in each truck full. I'm hoping he can sell it all. I really don't want a berm around two sides of the pond if he can haul the dirt out of here. They are about half way done. I'm thinking I will take another week off work and stay up here. I don't really want to leave when this is going on. I want to make sure it gets done the way I want it.
If you know anyone that needs dirt have them call Lynch Trucking and order some of my LOONEY dirt. :)
Brenda
Brenda.........OMG, are you getting any kick-back from that dirt?????
If you are still up north on September 12th, I would like to invite you to the Tawas Bay Garden Club annual Perennial Plant Exchange......We also invite other Garden Clubs, and last year we had almost 100 people there. Lots of perennials, seeds, bulbs, coms, and such. Just let me know. We have it at one of the parks in Tawas with a large covered enclosure. We also have a Pot Luck with lots of food and such. Aside from the Plant exchange, it gives up the opportunity to chat and visit with other clubs in the area. Infact, the AuGres Garden Club will be there. I know alot of the gals there and I can introduce you to them. Let me know...
Deann
Thanks Deann,
No, I am not getting a kick back on the dirt. :) I'll be happy if the price quoted to me for digging the pond doesn't go up if he runs out of places to dump the dirt.
Is the 12th on a Monday? If it is that is the day I'm going back home. I was going to leave right after Labor Day but the pond won't be done by then so I really need to stay another week to make sure everything gets done the way I want it. I wish I could just stay here and not ever go back. :) I'll be up here full time starting next April. We're selling the Garden City house. My son bought a house over on Delano Road and he's got his GC house up for sale. He'll be starting his plumbing business up here. Vern will commute, taking a long run and home weekends.
Stop by if you're over my way. Have a nice weekend.
Brenda
Brenda......here is the picture I took of your pond today.....so glad I got a chance to come on over and see all the wonderful things you have done to your "farm". You truly have a green thumb and all of your transplanted perennials look happy where they are growing....can't wait to see the finished Pond.....
