What herbs make good houseplants?

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

I have an herb garden outside, but it would be fun to have one inside, too, that would thrive year-round. Does anyone have any suggestions for herbs that would do well indoors?

Thanks,
Dana

Hi there, everyone.

Am seeking comments on fatsia japonica as year around houseplants only! All comments are welcome.

I've never heard of Fatsia Japonica used as an herb, but that aside. . .

Dana - what sort of light situation do you have indoors? That will determine the plants that will work best inside.

Although, while a number of herbs can be maintained at the survival level indoors over the winter - raising them indoors year-round is a stretch unless you have a greenhouse.

Hmm, well we have quite a few different windows, but the one by the kitchen is a southwest window and gets direct light in the afternoon. We don't have a greenhouse (although I hope we do sometime soon!), but I was hoping some could be raised indoors. I'll take what I can get, though. :)

Thanks,

With southwest light you could probably try various basils & coriander as far as annuals; & chives, mints, rosemary, & scented geraniums for fairly reliable perennials. Depending on the humidity level you might also possibly get away with thyme & tarragon, although those don't seem to perform as well indoors.

Well that sure sounds like a good selection to me! I think I have seeds for some of them-- should I wait until spring, or do you think I could be successful if I plant some now? Thanks so much for your reply. :)

If you're sowing them indoors, it doesn't make any difference when you do it. To ensure a constant supply (sometimes indoor herbs aren't especially long-lived) you may want to do a couple of staggered plantings a month or so apart.

Okay, thank you! I'll give it a try.

Hi :)

Has anyone tried pineapple sage as an indoor herb?
