Well this just might do it, I keep fighting all kinds of problems with Brugs, but this is the limit. I had a couple of White Flies a couple of days ago, sprayed everything, now ALL my Brugs are covered with them, even the heavy storm we had last night did not get rid of them. I have about five that are loaded with buds, and even the buds are dropping off. I have pretty well made up my mind to stop fighting. get the good ones either dug up, or take cuttings and put them in the house, and just let the rest go. I love them but I am too old to keep up the expense of fighting all the time.
Doris
White Flies. Grrrrrr
Gosh Doris that is sad news. I read that whiteflies carry broadmites on their legs. You might just be headed for double trouble. Maybe you could just get rid of the problem brugs and start fresh next year?
Doris , use this oldie remedy.
Cheap to make and works .
~ ~ Horticultural Oil Recipe ~ ~
1 C. Soy or Cottonseed oil (any oil except corn oil)
1 Tbsp. white or lemon dish soap - no grease cutter formulas like dawn, etc
Use: 1 - 1 1/2 tsp. per Cup of Water to spray.........Only spray Below 85 Degrees temp.and not in full sun.
I even use this indoors if needed.
Mites,scales,psylia,whiteflies ,mealybugs & some caterpillars
How long (typically) till you have established control?
Doris,
I know exactly how you feel. I'm suffering from Heat Exhaustion/Dehydration partly due to having to water some of my Brugs 3 times a day in this horrible heat wave we've been having. I almost went to the emergency room last evening but found information on the internet which enabled me to figured out what was going on and started chugging Gatorade.
Now this morning I discover white flies. If they weren't loaded with buds I think I would just turn my back.
I don't have enough strength to spray with the oil treatment above or I would. I'm going to try to sprinkle in some Bayer Rose 2in1 systemic granules and hope for the best. If I weren't sick I would do both!!
Good Luck with your brugs.... you've worked too hard to give up now!!
Judy
Judy, the whiteflies won't eat much and you sure don't need to be out in the heat until you are feeling a lot better. Take it easy.
Doris, let me know how this recipe works for you if you use it. I've copied it off so I'll have it if Ihave a problem in the house again this winter.
I have copied it off, but I now have 87 Brugs outside and I just don't think I can keep spraying them, it takes forever, and the heat has been the worst we have ever had, as some of the other States are having.
Just take care of yourself Doris.
Plants can easily be replaced but you are one of a kind.
Doris,
94 degrees here now. How about using the Cutter again? Maybe it will knock them out. The Bayer Rose 2in1 lists whitefly as one of the pests it kills. You could use it and in the meanwhile let them eat what they will until it kicks in. It didn't cost all that much, but for the life of me I can't remember exactly how much. It will kill lots of pests just be careful not to use but a little. I'm having to use it more often than the 6 weeks weeks it says because I don't give them the full dose. The first couple of brugs I did and lost almost all the leaves but they popped back full force.
I'm sorry you're having these problems also.
Judy
PS DH, bless his heart, is fixin' ta cut off all the leaves except the top cluster so that I won't have to water so much.
Thanks scooter.
Judy that is what I have been using, how about lending me your Hubby to help out LOL
Doris, I know this has been a hard year for you, and alot of growers, myself included. Name the pitfall, and it has fallen. The only thing left, I swear, is a plague of locusts (I know, bite my tongue!)
Remember that we're all pulling for you, and the cooler weather is just around the corner. The blooms you have had have been just beautiful, so I think you a great "comeback kid!"
I like the recipe that Scooterbug added, and I will try that in the future, especially indoors as it is not biohazardous. Thanks for posting.
I agree with the others here, you and Judy are much more important than each indivdual plant. Take care of yourselves first.
I'll be thinking of you guys.
Doris,
My DH is one of the most wonderful of people!! If I asked him, he would get in the van and start driving your way, but right now he's gotta take care of me and "our gang" of critters!!!
It looks like you are going to get the tail end of a storm and after it rains will be a good time to add the Bayer Rose 2in1.
Just take care of yourself first.
Hugs,
Judy
Judy, Forgive me , I missed your post. You take care now cause we can't clone ya either .
S.
Judy thanks anyway, when you got a good one like that hang on, I had one but lost him to the dreaded big C.
I am hoping if it rains again I will rebound, and start over. *S*
Gosh almost lost this one to the Big C about 7 years ago, they took out a kidney found another tumor in his stomach which tested positive while he was on the operating table. .. prognosis 3-4 months because the cancer had spread, etc. When the doctor told me he asked that I hold my emotions until the test results were verified... sure!! I was the one who told my wonderful DH that he had less than 6 months to live.
Three days later they told us the first lab results were wrong, that the tissue had since been tested 2 more times without any indications of cancer... 95% sure they got it all and he wouldn't have any more problems as a result of the kidney tumor. He's healthy as can be and I thank the Good Lord everyday that I still have him with me.
Judy
Gosh Judy, that was a close one. I'm so glad that you still have your DH to share your love and life with. Don't know what I'd do without mine. Thinking the good thoughts for all of you here at Dave's. It sure seems like it's been a rough year for so many here.
Mary
Judy I am so happy for you, my husband was bed ridden, at home for over a year, I was the only one he wanted to see, so it was pretty hard on me but I always thanked God I had the strength to do it, back 20 yrs Medicare did not help with anything if you stayed at home so I not only lost my husband, I lost everything else, but I am healthy so I do not complain.
Doris
Doris,
When we look back on what we have given to others, it should remind us to be good to ourselves for we are the only one we will never leave or lose.
Do whatever it takes to make sure those Brugs pull through, too make you smile. They make our heart sing!!!
Hugs,
Judy
Well last night I went out and used the Cutter again, I guess the only thing wrong with losing leaves is the looks of the plant, mine are so loaded with buds now that I have people stopping to look, I will just pray the Cutter takes care of those pesky bugs, I know I should be thankful that it is only plants I have to worry about, my heart goes out to all who are having to leave their homes right now.
Doris
Scooterbug will mineral oil work for the Horticultural Oil Recipe?
Thanks
Ruth
hello Jazz, guess your Dad is getting reved up for his trip. yep, actualy I now have 104 a very nice DG member came by my house today and he brought me a big one in a pot, and I got a couple more from members, the CUTTER spray saved my sanity though, it did kill a lot of bugs, but in a couple of weeks I will be cutting most of them up for starts, too big to dig up and they will surely die this winter.
You might want to try Spectracide Bug Stop for Gardens. I've had really good luck with this stuff. Buy the concentrate and you can double the dose and it works pretty well. It says it will keep the plants bug-free for 14 days.....yeah sure! I spray my starters with it every three days. The whiteflies don't attack my established plants, just my starters. It has never done any damage to the plants and I also use it on the established ones about once every other week to keep all the other critters off. I mix it with Algo Flash fertilizer and kill two birds with one stone.
Ruth, Mineral oil ?
I would never think of trying that.
I wonder if it would even emulsify as the veg oils do ?
I would be afraid that it would smother & kill the plants.
My spray is 100% organic and can be used on anything , even food type plants.
Good Luck (((*-*)))
Thanks.
Kareoke.. Yes he leaves tomorrow.. I told him to pick up some azomite for me since they sell it all over MIchigan.. not here though
