Ah, beautiful! Depending on heat! She's a beauty, Kay. They call her a chameleon, but you can recognize her by that orange center and huge overlap;-)

I hope Kay is all right and that she still has her Kimo! She lives in a place which got hit hard by Katrina, and she is not responding to my emails. I think she may have gone to stay with family. I hope her home and her lovely garden is all right. If it isn't, I have many of her plants, and I will surely send them to her when she gets back.

Kay is fine.. she finally got her phone line back couple weeks ago. If her Kimo didn't make it she was generous enough to give me a medium rooted plant and I will be happy to give her a cutting of it back.

Thanks! I've heard from her also:-)

Thanks, Trish! She's fine. Just getting ready to go back into dormancy. I had whacked her off big time after Katrina, because we were so short on generator fuel and could get no more, I didn't think I would be able to water at all. As you know our electricity came back after 13 days, so they all started growing again.

If my cuttings don't all rot out, I should have quite a few to trade come spring.

Clare, you have mail.

Kay, one of yours is about to bloom if the cold doesn't get here first! It's the one that we think is Hilo Beauty, but I've been told that it couldn't be because the newest leaves aren't dark purple enough. It will be fun to see what it turns out to be. It's the one with leaves which have a red border. It also has many, many branches, which is so cool!

Clare, "Ruffles" has red rims on its leaves, too. I think that might be the one you dubbed "The Claw" because of all those branches. It's one of those rainbows.

Let me know when it blooms. Has your Hilo Beauty ever bloomed for you yet? After I cut mine back, it's the only one that has not leafed out profusely. In fact, it's only got one little leaf node that is doing anything active at all. The trunk is 8 inches around near the bottom, and it was rubbing on the soffits on the house (in a pot) when I cut it back. I hope I didn't do any permanent damage to it.
As profusely as it bloomed last summer, it did not bloom at all this summer, although it had a couple of spikes when I cut it. Our weather has just been the pits this past summer, and I spent so much time just watering, I really didn't have time to fertilize and prune and spray like things needed. Arlene and Cindy both blew hard enough to break off a bunch of my plants at ground level without delivering a drop of much needed rain. Then there was Katrina headon. We're back in the drought now. The only rain we've had in 2.5 months was Katrina, which rained so hard on that one day that it just all ran off.

Not on the subject of plumies, but how did you root that passiflora alata ruby glow? 'Got a few people wanting them, and I don't seem to have the magic formula. That plant is just too beautiful for words!

Kay, I actually have two ones that are shaped like "The Claw," and they both came from you! They must have some magic going on in them. One is Vanda Ruffles and the other is Hilo Beauty. There is another Hilo Beauty in there somewhere, but the Hilo Beauty that is shaped like "The Claw" should bloom in a week or so. I don't know. I need to put question marks after the names until they bloom, and we can be sure what is what.

Wow! An eight-inch trunk! That's awesome! I'm sure you didn't do any damage to it. These trees are so adaptable.

I'm so sorry about the awful weather you have been experiencing. That's just the pits. Hopefully, you will get twice as many flowers next spring/summer. I sent you an email about the "Ruby Glow."
