Suggestion for a zone 3A shade med.height perennial/shrub?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Ive been clearing out ground cover behind my large laural leaf willow tree and north fence. Now I would like to put something of moderate height behind it. I have a lot of shade beds and the usual moderate to large perennials; aruncus(goatsbeard) is probably the obvious choice but I already have several. I'm thinking maybe a dogwood with variegated leaves. This is not dense shade because the tree canopy is quite high and there is lots of light although very little direct sun. Anybody have some other ideas?

Heres part of one of my shade beds as it was last year.

my diablo ninebark (sp) does really well in partly shady north facing backyard and adds some nice color; also have flowering almond their which is nice in the spring but pretty ordinary the rest of the year

Thats interesting! My diablo is out almost in full sun!

Nice idea - I love the color and I could put something pink in front of it - I have a couple of filipendulas with pink flowers that I want to move there.

Thanks

What about a ligularia even though you'll have to water it now and then.

Edited to add - of course, martagons, martagons.

Another good suggestion - actually as I was wandering the garden this morning I looked at the ligularia (which is kind of stunted this year) and thought it might do too!

Thanks. I will be mulling this over all winter!
