Wow..high priced hoya on Ebay

Long Beach, CA

Did anyone see this lising?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7708878340

Is this a legit hoya I wonder?

Marcy, I would think it's a legit hoya. I have the plain green kenejiana. This is nice, but it's not worth $99 in my opinion.

I thought that H. kenejiana and H. sp. PNG-1 (or 4?) were the same....I have seen that coloration on nutrient deficient plants, especially with the wavy leaves. I smell a rat. For 99.00 I would like to see the import permits!!! It could also be an introduced virus to produce that affect...sort of a plant steroid. Hmmmmmm

Hendersonville, TN

Asiatica Nursery has the yellow flowered kenejiana for $14 and a red flowered kenejiana for $20. I don't know how accurate their names are. Of course, I can understand the varigated form costing more but not that much! And it has just been listed on ebay....it'll be interesting to see what happens on this one. If anyone here wants it, I promise to not bid the price up on you! :-)

Las Vegas, NV

I think most of us will be watchers and not bidders. We may all be Hoya additcts, but there are a few limitations and $99.00 is one of mine.

I didn't know there was a red flower kenejiana. I remember only seeing "yellow" listed. It's a hard to find Hoya, not many offer it. Deb

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Carol my #1 or 4 doesn't look anything like the kenejiana I have. You say you want to see a picture? Hold on, I'll take one and be right back:-). Ok, I'm back, here's the picture. The leaves are very stiff and thin feeling.

Awanda

Well, I must've gotten bum information. That's a new one on me.

I'll worry about that tomorrow....

99.00 No way Jose...if it is REAL....it'll be 9.99 next year like the variegated H. macrophylla!!!

Just a word of caution,I bought my Meglaster from him and payed three times what shipping actually costed and when I emailed him he said that the box wasn't free(Which I didn't know the post office started charging for priority boxes) and then it was the trouble of packaging the plant,Then the gas to bring it to the post office,So glad he didn't have to stop and get lunch! It could be 99 cents for all I care!

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Dianne I placed and received an order for priority boxes and other items from the Postal Service and I didn't have to pay for them. Where did you hear the USPS was charging for priority boxes?

A lot of post offices around here sell boxes on a stand. They keep the priority ones behind the counter that are free.

That is a lot of money for a hoya.... I am just going to be watching too.

New Iberia, LA

Awanda, The guy who is selling this 99.99 hoya told me the post office charged him for the box!!! I know they don't charge for that but he was trying to make excuses as to why I was over charged ..I looked back it wasn't three times I over payed it was four! the plant he is offering is growing in a 3 inch pot theres no way it will cost 14.00 more like 2.85..I always order those free boxes from the post office..Also his fedex two day is 28.00,I have bought several plants from Carol that weighed pretty heavy and never payed 28.00.Someone will bite but it won't be me...!

Re: shipping costs: When the boxes are free and USPS is being used, it is hard to charge 14.00 for a (from here) 3.85 stamp. Even their tape is free. I don't mind paying "handling" fees if they are reasonable and the plant arrives in good shape and is well packaged. I pay a membership to an Assn. of Floral Shippers to receive a FedEx discount. The fee is quite hefty. Sometimes I lose on shipping, sometimes I gain a few bucks...in the end it all works out! I like knowing that the plants will be in a box 2, max. 3 days where with USPS it can be anywhere from 5 to 11 days! I DO have to pay for boxes, order them, pay shipping to get them here, store them. I figure it takes me about 45 mins. to wrap the plants and pack the box ready for pick up. You can't believe how my back aches after doing that all day...and drugs are getting expensive!!!! This, of course, is IMHO... :>)

Long Beach, CA

Well, no way was I about to bid on it either. I would not pay that for one plant that may die on me anyway. I was just stunned to even see it there.
I think you may be right about it maybe having a virus or something. Of course you never know. Will be interesting to see if it sells.
I was also stunned to see some Epies (epiphyllums) go for over a hundred dollars for just a couple small plants too. What is with some people? Too much money, or does this obsession with plants eventually render one insane and completely helpless over our financial fate? Ha Ha.

Aberdeen, NC

Were there epi's that went over 100.00? Plants or cuttings? WoW, that is steep! I think that the bidding frenzy kicks in and competition on who will end up with the plant.,,maybe greed, too. Someone gets to make some money though!

Long Beach, CA

Yes, the auction is over, but here is the link:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7707637044

Granted, it is an unusual auction as most sell for under ten dollars. But still..........I am always amazed when I see these few that get so much for so little. I just don't GET IT...(??)
Marcy

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

It is so amazing to me the huge amounts of money someone will pay for a plant (or anything for that matter), so they can say they were the first to have it, when they know in a year it will be as common as apple pie. Ah, humans, we are an odd lot.

Aberdeen, NC

Marcy,
Thanks for the link....amazing, and not that big either!

Hey folks...I'm pretty sure that seller *is* Asiatica nursery...they're from the same town, anyways...and have a lot of the same plants.
And....as we know, Asiatica has high shipping charges, too. I have heard that they do have great plants, and definitely some rare ones.

I was checking the feedback, and holey smokes...some people of spent a big chunka change with that seller!!

I see they have Dracaena goldieana....I've been looking for that for years and years, and Asiatica is the only place I've seen it available....but it's just too much to spend for a plant that may not make it!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I see 0 bids on that hoya.

I have to look up that Dracaena, Nan...maybe I can find it here.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

lol!! You do live in that particular dracaena's 'ideal' climate, Carol!

I've read that it's native to 'Nigeria, 1000m'...and per AB Graf, he has seen them thrive in crushed pure lava in Hawaii!! Hmmm...sounds like your kinda plant!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I have a lead on one...but will have to track it down when I get back from NZ.

:>)

Hendersonville, TN

Well, it didn't sell. I wonder if they'll relist it at a lower price.

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Darn and I was going to bid on it, but my loan didn't come through in time:-).

Blessings,
Awanda

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I talked to Ed about that one. He said that H. kenejiana IS prone to showing wierd coloring in the midleaf and curling...every time they have a nutrient deficiency.
