Nanna,
What do you have your plant pots sitting in? My vision isn't what it use to be. LOL
TIA

Hey Patti,

They are sitting on my very cheep version of a self watering pot. I use Glad storage containers. Bill drills two holes in the top. One in the middle for the wick and the other on the side near the rim to refill when needed. They are not very attractive but they do the trick.

beautiful flowers!

They are so spectacular! Do you have a lot of others? (that is probably a silly question); I really like the idea of the glad boxes with holes. What do you use for a wick?

Silver Spring, MD

I have 3 others that are in full bloom and 4 that are just beginning to open. With the exception of a large pink and white "Mississippi" those in full bloom right now are NOID.

For wicking I use 4 ply acrylic yarn. I cut 12 inch lengths and leave about 4 or 5 inches trailing from the bottom of the pot. This will go into the well. I then put about a quarter cup of potting mix into the pot and curl the remaining yarn on top of that. I place the root ball in the middle and scoop in enough mix to lightly fill the pot making sure the crown is just slightly above the rim of the pot and not covered by the mix.

Those are just beautiful.....what side of the house do you have those on...north, south, east, or west? Thanks for sharing the pics.

Silver Spring, MD

Thank you.

The plants are on West by Northwest window. When the sun is full in the window I have a white sheer drawn to protect the plants. I open the sheers in the morning and try to remember to pull them about 3pm during the summer months.

The plants seem to love the light at the window.

Beautiful blooms! Your trick with the glad containers must be the secret to helping them bloom.

Oh how PERTY!

The light at my dining room window is the key. I have watered from the top, from the bottom, and wicked. Everything at this window blooms.

Hi Nanna,

Those AV's are beautiful!! Can I ask a question...what material do you use for the wicks and how much for each pot? I've got the same Glad containers and looking for wick material. Thanks,

Eric

wow - very well grown!

I really like the foliage on the one in the bottom left.

Eric - I don't know what nanna uses, but I use mason line - you know the white acrylic string at the hardware store?

Silver Spring, MD

Thanks for asking!

I use regular 4 ply acrylic knitting yarn. I cut the yarn into 12 inch pieces and soak them in water before putting them in the pots. I do a lot of knitting so I always have yarn on hand. It's important to use acrylic yarn.

Beautiful ! I like growing in natural window light too ! Your plants are so healthy and happy ! Sure brought a smile to my face ! Thanks for sharing.

N,
do you know the name of the one in the foreground, the lovely pinkish-red edged one?
They're all lovely!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Sorry I don't but they are beaitufl ! If you not showing or sell them give them their own names :)) . Allison

Don't know her name. The blooms have doubled since the picture and they hold their color.

We could have a contest. What is the perfect name for this pretty lady?

nannanavarro, that is to die for! so many blooms! what do you feed yours? love, right?
how about 'Pink Blush'

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

She makes me think of the costumes worn by flaminco or can-can dancers! My little one from you is still blooming too -- it's even more intense than the picture shows. What a treasure!

(Zone 7b)

Nanna, you have d-mail

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Is she grown in natural light WOW. Lots of pretty flowers. Yes what do you feed her. Tell us your secrets :)) Allison

Silver Spring, MD

I fill her well with a weak solution of 10-10-10. The mistake I made last year was feeding too much. This year I do about half the recommended amount on the bottle. I have been using Miracle Grow for avs and use 5 drops per quart of water instead of 10. I just switched to Schultz 8-15-9 for the winter because the light is not as long at the dining rooom window. We'll see what happens.

Critter. This is a different one than I shared with you. She is white and dark rose instead of pink and dark rose.

oh! sorry... guess I didn't look closely enough at the picture! Well, the one you shared with me has made a couple of folks stop dead in their tracks.... I've got it on the island, showing off next to that huge 'Buckeye Boysenberry' you admired.

(Zone 7b)

pictures! pictures!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Here's the stunning AV that Nanna shared with me -- I think it needs a snazzy name too!

The color in this picture is true for Nanna's AV. The AV behind it is 'Buckeye Boysenberry', which is actually purple rather than blue.... my camera just doesn't do purple well.... the flower is really the color that shows in the center of the bloom on the right.

I'll start another little thread to share some pictures of other AVs that are on my kitchen island tonight.

more!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

wow they are both beautiful. The one in the front with thr stripes looks like a Chimera. It is stunning ! Thanks for sharing. Allison

It's a teaser! The coloring is on the ends of the petals not in the middle. It make a very good look-a-like.

The one I gave Jill is pink and maroon. The picture on earlier in the thread, Nov. 3rd, is white and dark pink almost maroon.
