canna breeding project

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

Im currently breeding some 250 canna plants in about 30 different varieties. im crossing several brian williams hybrids with anything i can think of i currently have over 400 seeds sprouting looking for that next big hybrid. here are some pics of the more common breeders but as soon as babies start blooming im sure to get some neet stuff i also breed ee's and am working on bananas.

the variegated and pendulous pnk one are great! how do you get information on the current hybrids for a species like cannas? is there a listing somewhere?

keep up the good work

well there are so many and im crossing hundreds so ill have all kinds of new hybrids but as far as a database i know of none. i breed for size and color then set price. dark leaves are a plus but sometimes they flower tiny theese are great for crossing you end of with darker leaves and bigger flowers. i wish i could help more but there are so mant hybrids and so many new ones comming every day that i just set the price based on how pretty i think the plant is.

gotcha... so when you choose plants to hybrid you're just choosing them on desirable traits and hoping they're passed down to the next generation? i'm familiar wth genetics i'm just unfamiliar wiht real-life applications of it. do you have any patented hybrids?

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

not yet but brian williams has some and i have a few of his new hybrids so its going to be interesting to bad i have to wait till they all bloom to see what i got

i'm so interested in this. any suggestions for plants that grow to flowering fast (maybe within a season) that would be easy to hbridize? sorry if this is way off topic i'll take it somewhere else.

im in kentucky and with a green house to seed erly you can take a canna seed and see its offspring bloom in a single season they are like weeds so be carefull they reproduce fast. i have seedlings this summer that are from seed i got off my spring seedlings. so from seed to adult and seed to about 8 inches tall in a single season

What do Canna seeds look like? Can you possibly post a picture of the seeds on and off the plant? Curiosity will kill this cat! Thanks!

Louisville, KY(Zone 6a)

i sure will as soon as i get a sec i hace about 500 seeds that i just started to germinate they are small about the size of a pea and black but not all canna's produce seed but i have found that most produce good pollen so i take the pollen from the non seeded varieties and cross the seed bearers the pic will be ub in a few. ps they grow behind the flower in usually green or red pods when they turn black there redy to pick the pods are different sizes as the species tend to produce more seed than hybrids but dont take my word for it try everything i have been surprised before lol

hope this helps

So you're potting up the seeds immediately and growing the thru the Winter?
Hmmmmm............what soil mix and temps (both germination and growing) Jerry?
I'm assuming you can't give them too much light.

Carlab, Your second picture has stolen my heart! I am just starting with Cannas, and the varigated leaves are even more important to me than the flowers. Your picture titled "varigated Canna" looks like a Stuttgart which is tops on my wish list.

Thanks so much for the pictures of the pods and seeds. If I ever get that far at least I'll be able to recognize them. LOL

no they are sun worshipers and need a good amout of heat to germinate but yes i start them in seed trays but i cant give away all my secrets lol but just make they stay warm and moist they should start to sprout in a few weeks
