Amaryllis

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Hi There,

I have several Amaryllis which have been summering in the garden. When should I be bringing them in - about now? Cut off the foliage and let them dry somewhere? And what should I use to kill off any beasties which have laid eggs, etc in the bulbs?

I have abysmal luck in getting them through a period of dormancy without something eating them and would appreciate any suggestions.

was wondering the same thing myself today,,
Hope someone can give us an answer.

They don't have to go dormant to bloom. The more leaves they can develop, the better they bloom. You could just give the leaves a wipe down with water and a little soap.

Keep them in the house if you have room. They don't need a period of dormancy unless you want them to bloom at a particular time. Just treat them like any other indoor plant.

Dont cut the foliage. But do check it well and probably wash it off(put the pot in a plastic bag and put it in the shower) . If you want to you can give it a rest period in the cool dark basement and repot after a month or so and then bring it out but I dont even do that anymore. I dont put mine outdoors any more either after I had a good crop of slugs one year!
They spend the summer on the bathtub ledge with lots of indirect light from the nearby south windows.

this is a timely subject. I was looking at mine, wondering what to do as well. It's got 4 nice big green leaves and has been in the house all year. The bulb looks kinda dry now. Should i be watering more and maybe feeding it? and if I should be feeding it, what with?
