Here's Philodendron 'Prince of Orange'.
It's an easy grow but finicky about light and water.
Treat it more like an Indian Rubber Plant than a Philo.
Ric
OK a little smaller plant this time.
That is gorgeous Henry! Jenny
I have a small one of these. I like philos (and monsteras, and raphidophoras, and... lol). It doesn't hurt that orange is my favorite color!
Thats awsome where did you get it?
ely
Awesome, Ric! I could have bought one the same time I bought my Philo Princess.
:) Donna
Man I hate it when people ask me the "Where did you get it?" question.
Cause then I gotta say HD in a clearance bin.
They had 5 orchids (half dried up) , this ragged slightly orangey looking philo w/ one leaf (I found the tag stuck in the bottom of the pot) and 4 5" pots of mostly dead purple oxalis.
I offered them 10 bucks and they threw in a ripped bag of orchid bark.
You've seen the Prince.
2 of the orchids were worth saving (repotted w/ the bark).
The 3 other pots now hold new orchids.
And the Oxalis were just going dormant from lack of water! lol
We have them everywhere!
So I guess....................the simple answer is HD.
Ric
ahhhhh
lowes is a good place to get good deals like that.
ely
Yes I saw a Philodendron 'Pink Princess' in a thread the other day.
It was a Lowes or HD find for a song.......
Ric
That is so pretty. I got one several years ago and I still have it(that's good for me with philos)
I've kinda had one of you learning experiences w/it.
First too wet, then too dry, too much light, not enough.
I finally found the idea situation for it.
Treat it like Angel Wing or Rex Begonia.
It gets maybe 20 minutes of morning sun and maybe an hour of sundown sun. Heavy dappled Maple shade the rest of the time.
I've watered it 2 or 3 times this Summer.
Rain has done the rest.
Ric
Ric, I put mine under an orchid tree, gets the light you describe and it's happy. I probably shouldn't treat it like a begonia(those are all dead). See what I mean, I'm a plant killer!
I seem to remember some chlorinated ferns by the pool too...............lol!
Hey that was some HUGE climate move you made.
It's to be expected.
A lot different when your houseplants are perennials now eh?
Ric
Lol, Cala, I feel your pain! As soon as I read "treat it like a begonia", I thought, "But I don't want to kill it!". Mine is in a brightly shaded spot and gets watered once a week or so. Seems to be doing fine and putting out new leaves.
Carter, what is it that kills the begonias? The alkaline soil? Heat? I've tried them in the shade, the sun, part sun........no luck. My neighbor has impatiens, but I seem to kill those too!
Ric, I thought moving to this zone would be like growing stuff in a big greenhouse. Boy was I wrong! It's a lot more work!
Well now you've got to deal w/ the natural pests, diseases and such.
I lived in FL for a little bit and killed everything. lol
Ric
I don't know, Cala. I think it may be heat. I had some nice tubers I bought from Home Depot last year. Started them indoors and put them out in late winter (just after last "frost" for us) and they grew well in a hanging basket and looked nice. Then all of a sudden - sometime after it started heating up - they pooped out and were dead as doornails. I've tried others - always potted - and they just don't make it. Now, oddly enough, I had a little begonia seedling pop up in one of my other pots. Don't know where it came from, but it grew like crazy - not very attractive, it became a small cane type with plain little white flowers - and, in fact, was still growing like crazy a year and a half later until I recently ripped it out. Maybe out of vengence, maybe out of I just didn't like it, maybe jealousy, don't know. I think I was just bitter. lol!
Susie and Carter, I kill them also. I think the problem with mine were I left them potted uder a tree and the heavy rains drowned them
"small cane type with plain little white flowers - and, in fact, was still growing like crazy"
No, no, no Carter. Tell me you didn't do away with it! I have wanted a cane Begonia with white flowers for a long time. I would have given it a GOOD home. *sob*
Pati
I'll check and see if there's any of it left, Pati. I tell you though, it's just a plain ol' little thing, nothing exciting - but, it did seem to bloom well, even though they are (were) small and white.
Well, Carter, I'm a plain ol' little thing too so I could relate! LOL I'm sure I will find one eventually. If any of it survives, when you see it just think of me. *smile*
