Hi, I would like to start AV but haven't seen any lately, would any one be willing to send me clippings for sase????..........Sharon
would like some clippings PLEASE
Things are a little nuts here at the moment, but send me Dmail in a week or so, and I'll see which plants could use a little pruning. I'm hoping to send out several boxes in a couple of weeks, and I can get some leaves out to you then as well.
Have you started AVs from leaves before? If not, there's some great information in the culture corner at robsviolet.com, http://www.robsviolet.com/violets_by_leaf.htm It takes patience, but it's fun!
Thank you That would be great let me know when and I'll send the sase Years ago I use to start av in water with good luck. I'll go to the site you have up .............Thank you Sharon
Please do send me Dmail in a week or two to remind me...
I'm pretty sure my big blue no-name one and my big 'Ruffled Sheer Romance' need to have their outer leaves removed, so I should have plenty of leaves to share.
Thank you I'lldo that Is there anything that you are looking for I have a feww houseplants?? ........Thank you Sharon
we'll figure it out! I'm pretty easy about the what/when of a trade, especially when it's not something that has to be planted outside in a certain season, and even then, there's always next year.
I'd love to start trading. How do you mail the leaves so the stay healthy and don't wilt?
Nanna
Leaf trading is so much fun. I think pretty soon all of us on the AV forum will have the same AVs!
I've had good luck sending leaves priority mail in slightly blown up ziplock baggies-- being careful not to get TOO much moisture in the bags. Then it's also easy to label them by writing the names of each leaf on the outside of its bag (I put the leaves from each kind of plant into separate bags). I've used more (empty) ziploc baggies blown up to fill the box so they don't get too jostled. As long as the weather isn't too hot, they arrive in great condition.
When I mail plantlets, I've had luck wrapping the roots in damp paper towel, covered in saran wrap, and taped closed. Then I stick it into a small plastic cup, top loosely with torn up and scrunched paper towel, and tape the top a bit to keep the paper towel in and the plantlet secure. I stick them in among the blown up baggies. So much fun!!

Sounds simple enough. Thanks. Can't wait to begin the trading. How are addresses obtained?
Nanna
You can either trade addresses in D-mails, or through the Address Exchange. If you click on "Extras" (just below the tabs on your home page), then there's a link to the address exchange.
Ooh, I can't wait until my plantlets get bigger so I can get in on the fun, too!!

Hi ,I found two av. with no name I finally can start colecting I was in the voilet barns site and wowQuestion you get 10 for $30 there choice? or I chose???? .....Avd for winter what kind of light do they need ?/.........Sharon
I've been planning a Violet Barn order for quite some time, but I can't decide!! Too many good choices, and then I think it would be fun to have some hoyas too, definitely another chirita (but which one?), and maybe try a begonia... I think when you do the 10 for $30 it's their choice. I usually keep my AVs in filtered southern light, but I'm not sure that's the best... See what other people say on that one! Welcome to the world of AVs!!!

Thank you for the info. .. Well I have to start somewhere .There choice I'm sure would be good. ..........Thank You for the Welcome!!! They have Some cool AV's.........Sharon
Hi can some tell me what kind of ligt do avs like? i want to make sure I do the right thing ...thank you Sharon
I think the east window I had as a teenager probably worked best for my AVs. But they're doing fine now too, in a room that gets bright light all day long from south, east, and west windows. I don't put them in the direct light coming through the window... some are in a corner between windows, some are further back into the room, so they get light that is bright but not direct. If they don't have enough light, they will tend to reach upwards with their leaves. Too much light can produce crowns with tiny, tightly packed leaves. Somewhere between too much and too little light will be the perfect amount of light for constant bloom -- that's an elusive thing to try to find! I just keep moving them around, as one plant's idea of "perfect" light will be a little different than the next one's.
Hiya Sharon,
Welcome to the AV forum!
Glad to see you found some local plants .
CritterO is right about the light from windows and I can add a few things to think about. Since you live up north you may want to be aware that the temps can get too cold around windows in the winter time, so you may want to put them on a blanket to protect the roots from being cold & wet ..the 2 things AV's hate.And/Or you may even move them back a bit from the cold windows.
I don't have great windows with good light so I grow most of mine under cheap fluorescent lights in a variety of ways that is alwasy changing..lol I keep adding to the collection so I keep adding lights...lol
I think they grow better under the lights and have a nicer shape and are less work than when grown in natural lights. If you grow them in a window you have to remember to turn them so they get light on all sides or they tend to grow toward the light and look lop sided...I even have a few of those rascals at the moment:)
Hope that helps a bit.

Thank you all for the info. may be I'll get a floresent light I only have the two right now but like everyhing else I'll get more .Just need to find a space !!! ...Thank you .Sharon
