Well we finally decided to make the plunge.
The Musa basjo is just too big to over-winter inside.
So I had to make a hole in the brick patio.
Hinse the square hole title.
Here's a shot as we started the undertaking.

Round Pot in a Square Hole
Ric I love what you have done to the place. Your Musa basjo should do fine in your zone. If I could be so lucky to have my nana's turn out to look like that. I do now they won't look like that over night. So hopefully they will start to grow great guns next year. Just finding what they like and doing it is what I am up against now.
Envy Envy that's what I have. Love it all.

Ric, I would have lent you a tiller. :) You know I had to wait until you are done to say so. LOL Looks great!
I have one of those small tillers and you know they do dig a mean hole. Just set it in the place you want a hole and let it dig and dig until it is deep enough.
Ric next time remember Badseed and surley you don't live that far from each other. You could use mine but I am a wee bit farther away then Badseed. Unless you want to plan a RoadTrip.
Linda
LOL Linda! Ric probably lives a mile from me. I guess he forgets about my toys or just wanted to be all manly about digging the hole. :)
It's probably the "man thing".

Well to tell you the truth by the time I took up about 12 sq feet of brick, drove to Chele's and back twice w/ two loads and unloads, relay-ed the brick .......this was easier.
I grew up working for a fence company so I'm pretty adept at digging holes. Least there were no rocks or, our usual bain, maple tree roots.
When we did one of our ponds I actually had to take a chain saw into the hole..........errrrrrrrr!!!!!!
Plus NNNOOO trip to Chele's has ever gone down in under 2 hours..........LOL!
Ric
Looks good. That sure is going to be a great centerpiece for your patio.
Thanks Roz!
I need to post a winter shot to show our layout and the bones of the yard.
The Musa is in the Brickroom. (back S/E corner)
When we were building the fence we found a brick driveway under 6" of dirt. It probably dated from around 1940.
We excavated and somewhat leveled it up.
