Espalier Fruit Trees

I hope I spelled that correctly. Has anyone tried to espalier an apple tree? I am interested in trying this but I am not sure how to start. Do I need to buy special stock or do I just buy a likely looking victim at the nursery and start pruning?

I am thinking of making a couple of dwarf Honey Crisp apple trees into a screen for a patio area.

I haven't tried to espalier an apple tree because I've alway has room for a full tree. I have, however, gardened with edibles for over 20 years. Unless you have other apple trees, you will need a pollinator for your Honey Crisp trees

I've look looke up some websites that you might find useful. These have enough iinformation to get you started. The last site covers pruning an established espaliered tree. The first 2 websites, in particular, have information you might find useful before you get started.

I have been reading up on this too. Seems not difficult as long as there is a pollinator, plenty of sunshine and judicious pruning. Sadly, I can't plant yet, gotta get the hardscape down...

Where do you find your trees? Are there many cultivars hardy in zone 4?
