First blossoms for Maya:
My! What a fragrance!
Test Maya blooms amidst a garden full
BEEEEEEEEEEE-U-TEEEEEEEE-FUL Polly!!!!
Polly, my Maya doesn't smell. If she did, I'd probably have a dozen Mayas. Island Girl has buds, but hasn't bloomed yet, I hope it was her fragrance and that mine will be fragrant too. Both of yours are beautiful, so healthy - IG really has a nice big flush....tell me, what color is Island Girl, I cannot tell if she is white, yellow or pink or a combination...
It makes it so hard to go in at night... or not come back out at midnight to see them fully open and get a sniff. Thats with my abused nose. I wonder what cats or dogs think?
I was outside till 3 AM last night, Blaine. Then I got spooked. I have been ever since I saw that serial killer on TV this week. The fragrance was overpowering though in some parts of my yard.
Polly, so pretty. Thanks for the bloom show. I love them all. So funny your first pic, I was looking and looking and thinking I must be nuts for I couldn't see even 1 bloom.
Kell, your cuttings have been such fun for me to grow and show - a really great idea for the Brug forum to watch. Many thanks for sharing with us, and creating the competition.
Sherry -L, I took this shot from my back on the patio to show the mixture of creamy white and apricot IG shows; from the tips to touches on the sides, to shadings in between - each one is splattered a little diffferently.
8ft, It's my bedtime trip - the sniffing thing; Maya was so compelling last night, but this morning not a bit of scent.
IG is wonderful, with Vers orange in close competition.
Polly, I am so PROUD for you!!!!
Judy
Your description of Island Girl is great, I cannot wait until mine blooms!!! Thanks, Polly!!
Isn't that the truth!! Not a lick of scent during the day.
I'm juuuuuuust about getting a little bored with brugs. Nothing happens till after dark. Nobody is on the street and potential visitors wouldn't be over after 9pm anyway. You can't just cut a bouquet of flowers and take them in, it seems you have to cut a branch and that didn't even work very well. I took a chunk of Harlot the other night. It was almost instant flop.
Oh well.... get my sniffs and take a few pics for future ref. I've been so preoccupied watching Julies seedlings and Harlot I'm all but missing others till this hooked my left nostril.
Blaine, I finally smelled kool-aid, but it's not a brug, but a New Improved Meyer's Lemon and the tiniest of blooms will smell forever, I mean a really long time, and a very long distance. I will get another Meyer's next spring and we will have one lemon soon ready to harvest soon, which should be good for at least one Stolie and champagne, laced with Meyer's...
Stolie AND champagne???? And I love lemon added to anything. Never heard of the 2 mixed together. Does it still bubble? Must be lethal.
Blaine, LOL, I never thought of brugs that way. But you are right. They even open fully at night where in the day they sometimes just hang. At night they are advertising themselves to any moth that happens by, hoping to get pollinated, so they look their best.
Thanks Polly, your pictures are just great.
Blaine, your picture is so pretty!
Reminds me to take my camera out at night for a sniff and a "shot' (camera, i.e!
Am I the only one that loses threads?? Kell, et al, we had Stolie, champagne and Meyer's Lemon drink at Lilette, a small, local bistro in Uptown New Orleans (http://www.liletterestaurant.com/). The combination of flavors is unusual, it's a crisp drink, served in a martini glass, with a whisper of Meyer Lemon juice around the rim, and a curly twist of ML rind wrapped around a glass swizzle stick - the drink, of course, is a mixture of Stolie/champagne/ML, and, yes we could see bubbles the shaker chilled drink, strained, served without ice. I suppose the glass swizzle might have been to reduce its effervescence, the bubbles were tiny and the mini-pendant light above the table made them look like they were dancing. The chef said the Meyer's Lemon was fresh from CA, as well as the watermelon radish, sliced paper thin, the seafood was local and the world's best.
Blaine, I used MG yesterday, for the first time, maybe ever, on my brugs, and they look like they grew a foot over night. Harlot really jumped up, I'm really ready for her to bloom. I need a good shot of fragrance. I wish I'd get just one that smelled so loudly that I'd have to back away, but I don't think they make them loud enough for me...
Now champagne and Stolies will make everything look and smell lovely pretty quick. :)
This is also the first year I've grown nicotiana. I've believe I've decided it will be a regular now, especially around the sniff-challenged brugs. I've got two varieties but this one stands up, has nice foliage and when the sun goes down... it's tropical paradise and they have bright white little trumpets of their own about 2" long.
Oh cool, I've not ever grown these before but I think I have seeds...hmmm never knew they looked like this. Is this how your's look Blaine? Do they come in different colors too?

Okay. Money burning a hole in my pocket. Pleeze help me find a plant, not a seed or cutting, that I can grow. I'm an instant gratification girl and would LOVE to have such a plant. Do you think they would grow in my zone/area???
Considering it's also known as "Flowering Tobacco" yeah it will be right at home down there. It's an annual up here. I don't know how it'd behave in your neck of the woods except I bet you'll have seedlings up the wazoo. They sure produce a lot of tiny little speck like seeds. I ordered mine from FlowerScent this winter.
Julie, your photo looks like Maid of Orleans Jasmine, an evergreen jasmine that blooms all year round. Thanks, Baine, I'm off to check out the FlowerScent www...
Sherry lol...I looked it up according to Nicotiana, that's what it had...I guess there may be different kinds of Nic...but this one is one of them lol....pretty though eh?
You should write restaurant reviews, Sherry. I may go visit my sister soon just to go to Lilette. LOL. And I love seafood too. I may also try your "combination of flavors is unusual, it's a crisp drink, served in a martini glass, with a whisper of Meyer Lemon juice around the rim, and a curly twist of ML rind wrapped around a glass swizzle stick".
Sounds so YUM YUM good. LOL
Sherry your link doesn't work but for any interested, here's a link to Flower Scent gardens. Glenn is a fantastic guy and all the plants I got from him this spring have been nothing short of amazing.

I'm also saddened that the Mean Joe Q. Public has forced him to change some of the things that made his nursery so personal. BUT - if you love fragrance, he has a clearance sale going on now. I just ordered 11 plants. Five bucks a pop. I ordered 5 Viburnum Burkwood, 3 Guacamole hosta and 3 White bush clematis.
