Here is what I got in the mail today.
:) Donna
Alocasia Sinuata
That 's a beautiful one. I love the tiger stripes on the stems.
I love my babies and can't wait til they grow up.
MsC
Thanks, MsC. Do you have this one to?
:) Donna
Hi Donna,
Yes, I added them to my ever growing plant collection this year and have been very happy with them.
I love the ruffled edges, too. They are supposed to get very large. I potted mine because we have been so dry here and I thought it would be easier to water them.So far they are doing great.
MsC
Do they require alot of sun and water?
:) Donna
Mine gets about 4 or 5 hours of early day sun and is in "bright" shade well before 2pm. They allegedly do well with up to 80%+ shade, so they're not piggish about it. Make sure your soil mix is highly aerated. I'd through extra perilite, peat moss and some bark to make it drain more quickly.
Thanks for the tips. When I have to bring it in for the Winter should I leave it in the pot and keep watering it or should I let it go dormant?
:) Donna
You're growing it in a pot? As you may be aware, that will limit the size of the final plant, especially if that is the giant variety of the sinuata. All the same, I'd bring it in to a very bright location and let the plant do its own thing. If dormancy gets triggered outside, it very well may continue going dormant. In that case let the soil get moderately dry and leave it be for the winter. If it continues to grow, keep 'er watered and fertilize once a month or less. Enjoy the wait for next spring either way! :o)
Buck
Thank you again, Buck.
:) Donna
That's great info Buck... I did'nt know about them needing extra drainage at first and almost lost mine the first go. I did rescue them and was lucky I didn't kill em.
I'm growing mine in a pot until our weather gets a lil more reasonable here, we have been in drought or near drought conditions for the past 2 years . Seems like it rains all around me but not on my garden..lol
It's just easier for me to pot them & then keep them as houseplants, too.
MsC
Oh man just what I needed to see.
Another Alocasia I HAVE to have......now that I've seen it....lol
Great growing tips!
Ric
I can't believe you don't have this one, Ric...lol.
:) Donna

MsC

B_B,
I've not personally seen it but have seen some awesome shots.
I'm currently negotiating a trade for one. lol
BTW: The Motto of a Containers group I belong to is.
"You've been ENABLED!"
I'm beginning to think we need that here! lol
Ric (Who's never seen a plant he didn't like,
but killed many that didn't like him!)
They had one at the top level of the Baltimore Aquarium years ago (in their rainforest area) that was simply stunning ... that and a few of the giant anthuriums (both the "King" and "Queen" varieties) were more than mildly impressive!
The young'n I have is turning out to be one of the fastest growing aroids in the garden. After shop was set up under the dirt it turned its attention skyward and has been pushing out new leaves at a rate of a little better than one per week. My black runner and some un-named funky looking Xanthosoma are the only 'ears that have been out-pacing it. The Xantho is like something from a drive-in B movie ... this really sweet lady from Florida wanted to know how to kill this infestation of elephant ears she had in her yard and sent me a big old box of 'em before killing the rest. These things are evil! LOL I've yet to plant something that popped back to live and resumed growth so quickly ... and these dawgs were in a box with this brutal heat for 2 or 3 days ... THEN they sat in my house in a closed box for 2 days before I got back in town. Within 4 days they had fully recovered and began putting forth new leaf .... go figure.
