Variegated hoya

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

I bought this hoya the other day. It has much narrower leaves than my other variegated one, H. carnosa 'Krimson Princess'. Are they different varieties or is it just that the plant hasn't grown any wider leaves yet? I've noticed that some hoyas can have a wide variety of leaves on one plant. I'm just wondering so that I don't end up buying every plant that has slightly different leaves then finding out that they're all the same kind.

I got it from Art Knapp's Nursery. It's a nursery chain here on Vancouver Island in B.C., Canada. I imagine this hoya is a common one since this nursery doesn't specialize in them.

Quoting:
Hoya carnosa 'Rubra' or Hoya carnosa cv. Rubra or Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Princess' or Hoya carnosa cv. Krimson Princess
from PanamonCreel.

Sandy I too have one like the above and sent the pic to Milan for ID purposes. It was sold to me as Exotica by Pike Lake Nurseries. Meanwhile I had also gotten the more rounded leafed one and was informed that it too would be properly named as what is listed above.

I prefer to think of my rounded leafed one as Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Princess' (since I think it is much prettier) and the named Exotica as Hoya carnosa 'Rubra'. My own personal preference is speaking here however. ;)

This is the one I received as Exotica ... very similiar to the one I bought locally and posted for ID in this thread: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/503524/

The one sold as Exotica, pictured below, tho has not reverted back to green on any of the vines.

This is the one I think of as Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Princess' or Hoya carnosa cv. Krimson Princess. But going by the naming rules (as Milan posted) they both can share the same name.

Pic borrowed from one sent to me by Paridise.

Thanks Pam. So what it boils down to is that all the ones with cream in the middle of the leaves are Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Princess' no matter what shape the leaves are. That's good to know. I saw one with narrow leaves on ebay and they were calling it Hoya carnosa var picta. There was one on there called Exotica as well. I've seen a large number of variegated hoyas around for sale lately. Maybe I'm just noticing them because I'm looking for hoyas.

From the *little* I know yes.........I've sent many pics on variations of the above 2 pictured plants to Milan and his answer has always been the same. I had a really hard time wrapping my brain around the fact that both could have the same names (either Hoya carnosa Rubra or H. carnosa 'Krimson Princess' .. plus the other two ways of spelling either name). I'm sure he got tired of me asking. ;)

Tom's (owner of Pike Lake Nursery) answer to the above was that the rounded leaf one was a sport from what he called Exotica and someone multiplied it.

When you write the name of a cultivar after the species name, you write it with ' ' like H. carnosa 'Rubra' or you can write it H. carnosa cv. Rubra. It means the same...two ways to write it. :>)
