shipping pond plants

Augusta, AR(Zone 8a)

I have a lot of water hyacinth that I would like to share, but I don't know how to ship them so they survive the heat. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

When I got some it was packed several plants to a gallon size ziploc with the whole plant wrapped in very moist paper towels. Then the ziploc was put into a trash bag(it was a lot of plants)and the bag was tied and boxed for shipping. It was sent Priority mail with no problems. They looked perfect when I unpacked them.

I recently sent some Aquatic Sensitive Vine by curling it into a reliable 4 gallon ziplock bag with some water (but not full) and packed it in a box with some other plants. I was told it arrived fine.

I received water lettuce packaged the same way. I was thinking though, in addition to the zip on the zip lock, next time I would additionally tape the zippered side, just to make me feel better. :^)))

Lana, ...was the ziplock bag zipped up or open for ventilation? I have sent many plants before, but never pond plants. I just want them to arrive ok. Did you just get some recently? I mean do you think it's too hot to ship them now? They do seem to thrive in the heat of the summer. Sorry for all the questions, lol. Sheila

Hi Sheila,

I think we cross posted on the last one, so if I may answer you questions? Yes the zipper should be done up tight because there is water in the bag. The ones I sent and received were done in this awful heat and did just fine.

The only problems I have had recently in shipping was semi-succulents that had too much water in them and wrapped in plastic bags. They were boiled and cooked by the time they got to me.

Just be sure you send priority.

Thanks. You have been most helpful. I need to get some of these out to new homes before cold sets in, lol, as if that is anytime soon. I have to make room in my greenhouse. I have WAY to many things to overwinter this year.

Another tip...try adding as much crunched up newspaper to the box as you can...it works as a heat reflector. I have been selling plant off and on, on ebay for years and ALWAYS fill the box with as much newspaper as I can. Folks don't mind paying a little extra for HAPPY plants.
