You're so lucky to have monarch butterflies. I wish we had them here on the west coast. They're really neat looking caterpillars.

I remember finding those when I was little. Seeing your cats Wilma, and echoes chrysallis, makes me think I should be spending more time at the creek where I spotted so many as a child.

Wilma the ones you posted above and the fuzzy yellow and black ones were the ones I'd spend hours trying to find. Wonderful pictures of a gorgeous caterpillar. Ü

Dillpickle,

The Monarch are restricted to Milkweed. http://www.sdnhm.org/exhibits/monarca/teachers/lifecycle.html

If you have them on your dill, you most likely have larvae of the Black Swallowtail Butterfly

We started raising a few of the latter when my kids were small and I usually have them every year. Didn't see any this summer though and wonder whether the VERY hot summer made a difference.

Great links, Ann. Now I am a little more re-educated. Although I'm not sure I ever knew a whole lot about butterflies. Your second link led me to look at some more there and I found this one.

Hmmm, Todd if you are around, look at this one.

Your success at finding other links at the same site led me back to look for the Monarch. I thought it had to be there, but didn't have luck finding it earlier. With a little more persistance -

has better Monarch pics than the previously posted link.

And here is the list of butterfly-moth links -
