blooming oregano

Millbury, MA(Zone 5a)

Hi,

Well, as usual my oregano is flowering and I haven't had a chance to harvest any yet. Is it still okay to use or will the flavor have gone off? Yesterday I did manage to give the dill, basil, and lemon basil "haircuts" and have put some in the freezer, but I never seem to have enough time to do everything that needs doing! My sage blossomed this year too --- third year in the ground and the first bloom I've seen. Some of that clump is new growth though, so I don't have to worry about the part that bore flowers. (They were quite pretty while they lasted. A definite asset to the garden.)

While I'm at it, I might as well ask another question of the "herb experts". My small rosemary plant (upright variety) is turning yellow at the top. Would that likely be a result of not enough water? I suspect that as the big pot looks fine and obviously the little one would dry out a lot faster.

Thanks in advance for your response!

If you cut the blooms off now, you might still save the flavor of the leaves or at least have a chance to get some nice new growth before the end of the season. After they've bloomed, oreganos can get a really bitter flavor to them.

How little is the pot for your small rosemary? Mine get unhappy in anything smaller than 10 inches, even when I use the moisture crystals (which keep more water available to the roots without making the soil soggy, which rosemarys hate).
