I went out with my flashlight a few minutes ago to take a photo of my new CG bloom and found out I am not the only one who likes brugs!

wow.. very very nice...

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL. Is that a mantis?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Yes, it's a praying mantis eating a moth. Has anyone else seen white mantis? This is the first year I have any that are white.

Was it really white or washed out in the flash?
Most are green or brown and adapt that color through their first few molts, blending in with their environment. However there is a "Ghost" mantis that is whitish.

Irregardless - Double Thumbs up!! The next 4-5 weeks is going to be the best opportunity to see mantis as they mature. Your pic also testifies to it being diurnal and known to round up a few midnight snacks around artificial light sources at night.

Thanks for posting!

Cool picture.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I released about 200 of them this year and haven't seen a single one since. Maybe there wasn't any food for them, I don't know. I sure had hoped to see at least one egg sack from them for next year. Great picture.

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Very nice!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

This one was pure white. I saw another smaller all white one a few weeks ago, so it may be the same one. Maybe an albino? I also have pale green ones. Seems like more than normal this year and in colors I have never seen.

Neat picture! I also have a couple white ones running around here. This is the 1st year I have seen them also.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I saw my white friend this AM in the daylight and I could see a very faint hint of green in places on him. All the rest of him is white. Wonder if he is changeing to green as he gets older? He was visiting CG again tonight when I went out. Hope he is not chewing on a bit of the bloom. It might make him sick.

CW is doing very well for me. This is it's second flush of blooms. The mantis is under a leaf in this one too.

Here is a link with lots of mantis photos. I think mine looks most like the Giant Indian one, but I will need to get a daytime photo to compare. Sounds like some of them get big enough that they just might eat my little teacup poodle.

That is a great shot, I haven't seen any white ones here, but I do see the green one occassionally. Last night at dusk I had a hummingbird moth.

LOL! That one would even scare my fat cat! Here is my friend again from last night. I think we are bonding. I worry when I don't see him.

Susan that's a great shot of your buddy! lol...your brugs are looking great too :-))))

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

lagata ... where'd you get that? !! What's the dimensions?
You know how you can get the animated wire framed deer for Christmas lawn ornaments. Wouldn't that be cool in the brite green lites with hot red eyes and forearms reaching out now and then?

Susan maybe he's adopted this color since his territory is on these CG. If he was green he wouldn't be able to blend in for the stealth snatch. They are masters of 'Hiding in plain sight'.

Ozark, AL(Zone 8b)

Neat Idea 8ft. However I live on a private rd just outside of nowhere, so it couldn't be enjoyed by any but myself. It's about 6 ft x 4 ft, and I made it out of fence wire a month or so ago.
I considered painting it white (I made what I call my "Ghost Horses" with wire painted white) because it shows up so well in the evening particularly, but had no idea that a real mantis could be white!!

My list of favorite bugs is short, but praying mantis is at the top. (spider on a half shell comes in second, I think ).

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

You made it? I'm bowing in your direction!!

You plant flowers to please yourself so have fun with the Monster Mantis. In fact, if I had one it would be my summer lawn ornament and the red eyes should flash. That would be too cool!

I'm realllllly impressed with your creation.

Ozark, AL(Zone 8b)

Thank you much for the compliment!

Susan, do you have a green house you could over winter this neat creature in? Maybe it's a her, and could provide you with lots of future white knight mantis's?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I did see a smaller white one just a few days ago. Not as pure white as this one, had a little more hint of green. No greenhouse here, so I can only hope for eggs. lagata2, I remember seeing photos of your wire horses on another thread. You are a wonderful artist! I am so impressed with what you do. Am going to have to find that thread again. I was wondering about if the mantis had selected this plant because of the close match too. Do they see colors?

Here is a silver mantis that is in front of a Mexican Cafe about 3 blocks form where I live. He and his prey are made from old bumpers. Notice the Mexican hats made from hubcaps. A local man makes them.

you're closer
what's the address?
are there street lamps or security cameras around there?
what time do they roll up the sidewalks and do you think it'd fit an 8ftbed?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

It's on the corner of 17th and Van Dorn, Lincoln NE. Afraid it's fairly well lite and right across the street from a Fire station. They are chained to the light pole, so you better bring chain cutters. Otherwise, I could find out the name of the man who makes them for you. Might save you some jail time. LOL! I think it just might fit into your 8ftbed, but maybe not.
