Hello All.
kathy_ann is kindly sharing a Brugmansia cutting or two with me which should arrive today or tomorrow (I can HARDLY wait for the package to arrive!). As I am a complete novice at rooting these, could anyone point me to a good comprehensive source of information on the best way to go about it? Perhaps an old thread from this forum, or an outside source? I really want to do this right!
Thank you.
Erick
Rooting Brug Cuttings
Erick,
This time of the year they root easily when just put in a pot of WET potting soil. Be sure to set the pot where it will get bight light or highly dappled sunlight but not directly in the sun. Spritz the top of the cutting every day if your climate is dry, if it is humid you shouldn't have to do this. Keep moist but not soaking wet.
I'm also new to brugs so maybe more experienced brug growers will post also because there sure are a lot of ways to root a cutting. For more ideas, do a Forum Search entering the words "rooting cutting" when the list comes up, select the Brug Forum and process again. You'll get a listing of many, many threads.
Good Luck,
Judy

I put my cuttings in an bubbler and within three days they were showing roots. Then I put some worm caseing tea in with the cuttings and they went nuts!
Richard
really? Wow, the worm castings you soaked in water and added to the water in the bubbler? Now that's an idea! Thanks :-)
I bet it works, but it sounds gross !! I know manure tea works well too. I guess that sounds just as bad......
Thank you all very much for the good advice. You've given me lots of good ideas. I have spent the last two hours looking through old threads, trying to get a feel for the best way to root these cuttings. I've decided to try it both ways - soil and water. If they rot or otherwise don't prosper, it won't be because of lack of attention!
I'm optimistic that I will be posting my first Brug pictures on here next summer!
Thank you again,
Erick
Brug,
I make my own worm casting tea. I just put a light solution in the bubblers. Like a tablespoon to a pint of water. Would these brugs like the worn castings mixed in the soil I finally put them in? I have never grown brugs before.
Richard
Erick,
A friend gave me about 10 cuttings.... some really green and others what I think is called "wooded" thick branched. I used a little rooting hormone and put them in Miracle grow potting soil on my covered back porch. Within 6 days I had nice size sprouts (leaves) Now about 11 days later they are growing everywhere.
I got a rooted Charles Grimaldi that my friend promises to be an intoxication scent from about 50 feet. I cannot wait for it to bloom. She seems to think it could bloom before cold weather. Hope she is right!

I will have to try Miracle Grow soil. I wonder if it is the fertilizer in it that is getting yours growing so nicley SouthernlyYours. I wish i had read this a couple of hours ago. I just potted up about 25 cuttings. Next time....which probably will be tomorrow! LOL
.
SouthernlyYours,
Thank you for sharing your experience rooting your Brugs. I ultimately decided to root mine in potting soil as well, and now will carefully watch them to make sure the soil stays slightly damp (not wet). I hope I am as successful at rooting them as you were!
Good luck with the Charles Grimaldi. May you get lots of blooms yet this season! I hope to add that variety to my small collection someday.
Erick
I've heard that trading is popular among us brug folkes (I'm brand new so not sure I am one yet..... I read these posts and feel so inferior in my knowledge!) When I get a healthy plant/plants I will be glad to share cuttings. To me, sharing is a big portion of the joy of gardening. I will warn that I am way more into the beauty than the name so I can't guarantee any as "named". Best of Luck!

Thank you SouthernlyYours. I look forward to sharing my cuttings with you, and many others, someday soon. With all the good advice I've received on this forum, I am optimistic that I can build a nice Brug collection over the next couple years, and then actually have advice to offer others! I have to admit that it took me awhile to get up the nerve to actually post my basic questions here, but there was no need for that. Everyone has been extremely kind and very helpful. Their enthusiasm and kindness has defintely fed my growing addiction to Brugs!
Please make sure to post your Charles Grimaldi pics. I look forward to seeing them.
Erick
Hello All.
I have to mention that kathy_ann actually sent me FOUR different beautiful Brug cuttings. I feel like I've won the lottery! They were all very nice, healthy cuttings, obviously carefully packed and shipped. Thank you again kathy_ann.
Erick
Lots of good information here. Richard, I will have to try your castings tea in a bubbler sometime. As for the Brugs liking the castings themselves, I know mine do. Everything that gets castings in my garden really shows it's appreciation. I swear by worm poop!
I was wondering how you had your cuttings in the bucket, your last pic. shows. thanks.

Just wish you'ld take this a little more seriously. LOL,
Looks like you've passed rooting 101 with an A+.
Know you will have great Brugs.

Sugarweed,
LOL -- thanks! Now I need to tackle the second phase, overwintering! Sure hope I do as well with this course as I did with the rooting course! :)
