hoya pink silver

Covington, LA(Zone 8b)

I am enjoying the first flowers ever on a hoya. Such an unusual flower! I have them growing under the vines climbing on trellises. I have several different kinds now. It will be learning from my mistakes, I'm sure.

Dianne492 lives in the same area as my mother. When I noticed that, I called her and she invited me to check out her hoyas. Dianne's plants are lovely! All the rain that we have had and her skills have produced lots of blooms. She gave me advice and encouragement--that's all I needed to develope yet another plant addiction.

Those are beautiful flowers Flicker. I just got cuttings of that hoya in the secret hoya trade so I'm really interested to see them. I hope some day I'll have flowers like that. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Hey Flicker! I'm just down the street from you! I have a Hoya "Pink Silver" that I got three years ago from the Louisiana Landscape nursery in Mandeville and it has gotten absolutely huge. It stays out on my front porch all year long. Unfortunately it doesn't get as much sun as it would like and does not bloom profusely. Usually has about 5 blooms at a time. It has been the source of a mild hoya addiction for me. I have four of them now but would like to have a few more.

That is a beautiful flowa. I've had a pink silver for 1,000 years, or so it seems and it hasn't bloomed yet. You must be doing something right.

Yes, Dianne, that is the plant I traded from you. Actually it has 3 sets of flowers now. What is a1 group of hoya flowers called? The carnousa that I got ay Lowe's has small buds now. Send me a list of which passiflora you have so I can start more cuttings! For trades, of course.

Wow flicker, I am green with envy. I have had H. "pink silver" for some time, and have never gotten a bloom. What a beauty she is. I'm going to have to go give mine a talking to. Keep up the good work, your doing a wonderful job.

All my pubicalyx have bloomed well this summer. I don't know if it is because I used that "messenger", or the Peters bloom fertilizer, or spraying them with the Eleanors, or just because they are older plants that are happy outside there under that tree. Anyway, think I will keep treating them with kindness & hope they keep it up.

Marcy,
What is "messenger"? Don't believe I have ever heard of that. I do spray mine with fertilizer, a weak mix of ferti-lome 20-20-20, or hawaiian flower magic 9-18-9. What ever I have out at the time. Is it bad for them to be misted 5 or 6 times every day with fertilizer? It hasn't hurt them so far. Have you ever used a product I think it's called or made by bayer, that is a fertilizer and systemic in one? You can get it there in California, my sister always picks some up when she is over there. I haven't had a single bug of any kind on my plants since I started using it.

There was a thread last year about this time on the Brugmansia forum about it. I read it....got some....waited until spring used it a couple of times. Of course I was also using a lot of other things too, so I really can't say if it had anything to do with all the blooms I got this year. It has been a strange year weather wise too, so that may have affected how things went. However....I did use it and did get good growth and lots of blooms this year. So maybe it did help. It is expensive though.
At any rate...here is the thread on it from that forum:

They have a website too. It is mentioned in the thread somewhere.

As far as the Bayer product, I have used their houseplant spikes on a few plants that kept getting mealies or scale, but I have not put them in all my plants. The ones outside dont' seem to be bothered with much except the darn spiders now, and I guess they don't really hurt the plants..just freek me out. Ha
I have heard they quit making the spikes however, so I may have to start using the liquid this winter when I bring some things in. I just really hate to use such toxic measures. But I do know it works.

About 2 wks before the blooms appeared I used miracle bloom on everything. It seems to have helped in general. Blooms set on both of my older hoyas and my brugs. Doing it is a chore because of the heat but I usually get results.

Marcy,
Thanks for the thread, very interesting. Seems to work like magic. Did you use it on other plants, where you could notice the difference? I wonder if it is out in the stores yet? Did anyone else in this forum buy and use it. Seems to be a plant wonder drug:).

Covington, LA(Zone 8b)

Sure. It is common--Miracle Bloom--found at most plant sellers. Home depot, Lowe's, any place plant fertilizers are sold. Blue powder dissolved in water.

Prescott, AZ

Yippee. Home Depot is on my list tomorrow, will see if it is there. Sounds like it may be of some help.
Thanks Tammy

I don't think the stuff Flicker is talking about is the same as Messenger, is it?
Marcy

I've never heard of Messenger. What is it?

Prescott, AZ

O.K. I got that screwed up. So Messenger is not the same as Miracle Bloom. Sounds like it might do the same thing. I will have to look for both of them. Flicker, Marcy left a link for Messenger a couple of post up. Sounds like good stuff, look at some of the befor and after pictures.

Very interesting. I will try to get some for the bug problems.
Thanks!
