Separating Hoyas

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 9a)

Hi all, now that it's time for me to move the hoyas inside, I need to make some of my EA baskets into smaller plants. Since there are more than one plant in the baskets, can I separate them into smaller containers? Or do I have to make cuttings, eekk(scary)? I would like to make them into smaller plants so that I can give some of them to friends.

I've divided big baskets of H. pottsii without any problem. I unpotted it, looked for the major root stalks, cleaned as much dirt off the roots as possible and very very gently pried the different sections of the plant apart.

Right on Susan. And even you you rip off some big chung of root, as long as there are some left on the plant...it will surviive... These are tough plants!!!

Thanks ladies! I'm going to have some happy friends!

Is that true for just H. pottsii or all hoya's? I have two huge baskets of tsangii that I would like to split up. Well maybe just one of them. They are from EA, and I would like to change the soil in them as well.

Yes, I have done the same with H. tsangii. Easy, just get most of the soil off the roots and they will be easier to gently pry apart.
