Pruning hardy hibiscus

Munster, IN

Hi all,
I'm new to gardening so please excuse if my question sounds stupid. I planted a bunch of winter hardy hibiscus (got them cheap) and they're doing great. The problem is they're getting too tall for my garden (4 to 5 foot) Can I trim them? If I do, will they still flower? Thanks.

If you are talking about shaping they should still flower. However if you are talking about sever trimming they will not flower again till next year. I don't know much but I know some you don't trim much or at all and other kinds you can trim to the ground and they will grow back on new growth every year. Maybe this helps?? I will have to check back and see if someone more knowledgable has better advice!! Bonnie

Mark: do you have the ones with really large blooms (which is most like a mallow) or smaller, more frilly type blooms (also known as "Rose of Sharon")?

In both cases you can prune, but the mallow will always want to shoot back up. The "Rose of Sharon" type, on the other hand, grows a bit slower and takes to shaping a bit more ... how shall we say ... happily! :o)

Either way, they're both beautiful plants. Enjoy!
