First, the bulb basket is placed in the ground, then you arrange the bulbs inside. the idea being that in the Spring when the flowering is finished, you can lift the basker, bulbs and all, and place it in out of the way spot.
BTW, that's my very first Classica tomatoe this year.

Have you tried the bulb baskets?
I wonder if that would also keep out those pesky voles & other critters? They might dig down from the top, I suppose, but it's a neat idea regardless. Nice looking tomato, too! :-)
I have but only in the pond with canna -- they bust the thing by the end of the season.
I have seen some that have a lid on them too with bigger holes for growth.. could also go to the dollar store and get mini crates and colanders....
You know, now I'm wondering if I did in fact get baskets meant for pond flowers. I like your dollar store idea.

Mini crates would sure be easier than suggestions I've seen for fashioning wire mesh cages to keep varmints out of your choice bulbs & hostas! Good suggestion!
Shoot!! With a crate you could even simply wrap it in that chicken wire stuff--probably easier than some other methods!! hehehe I have had my bulbs eaten so it IS important. Nothing more disappointing than spending all that money and time planting bulbs to have NOTHING happen!! Waaaaaaa
