Begonia coccinea

St. Paul, MN(Zone 4a)

I have been growing this for about 7 years indoors. I like the way it grows tall and flowers so easily. Is there another cane begonia that you would recommend that is nice and tall like this?

P.S. If anyone is interested in a houseplant Euphorbia Flameleaf I listed it under plant trades although I am not really trading it.

Here's a rooted cutting of another cane begonia I got. It also had no identification tag. Does anyone know its name? It has very large leaves. Some a foot long!

Kathy ,
I double checked my Sophie Cecil and my Begonia Reference book... I'm almost certain the first pic and the new leaf pic are Sophie Cecil. It's hard to be absolute with just pics, but I've grown that one for about 20 years and I think I'd recognize it just about anywhere...lol
It is one of the best Superba Types you can grow and one of my favorites. The other one I have had and love is Irene Nuss... similar but it can get 6 ft tall if I let it. Sophie usually stays around 3-4 ft tall.

Your second one is a little harder to id because I can't tell much from the pic. Did it have a bloom on it? If so what color are the leafs and blooms.

Thanks for the great pic. Yours is a very pretty plant.

MsC, Isn't that the one I have? It looks as if the dapples on the leaves are smaller than mine though....and mine look kinda more pink............

scooby,
Are those dots or dashes on your leaves PINK in color or are they silver?
And what color are the blooms on yours???

I think yours is a different begonia and one I'm looking for, too.:)

some of them are silver, maybe it is the new leaves, but most of them are pink in color.....could it be the light hitting the back of the leaf and shining through? the back of the leaf is red.....and the flowers are light pink....like kathy's flowers.....I have a feeling that i have the same one as kathy......it looks very much like hers....how about that.....both i michigan too....coincidink.......tried to get a better pic of it for ya, but I just cant with the light i have and the position its in.....I really think that it is the same, but i dont know much about them.....it looks the closest to it that i have seen......

scooby,
It could be the same, but the markings on Sophie Cecil are almost always silver. There is a one almost like a sister to it called Lana and the leaf markings are pink with lighter pink flowers....
I'm hoping yours is 'Lana'! lol I lost mine and would like to replace her....

The second begonia that I had posted had pink flowers. I do have another that has red flowers and the leaves look the same. Maybe I'll have to look closer to find a difference to help in identification. I do appreciate your help. What book are you using as a reference? I too have many begonias and may want to invest in one.

Hiya Kathy,
The books I use are old, but not necessarily out dated in the form of information.
The best one and my favorite,is
"Begonias Complete Reference Guide" by Mildred L.Thompson & Edward J.Thompson it's a first edition copyrighted in 1981. It is not a pretty picture book but a true reference book. It has a few color pictures in it but most are line drawings and specifics related to hybridizers and their notes, etc. I do not know if there is an up dated version but you can search old libraries, book outlets etc, and of course eBay...lol
A newer version would probable be expensive, but well worth the money for sure-if you are into begonias.
It covers every type of begonia and all the known species at the time of publish. It has care recommendations, hybridizers name,a complete list of the registered varieties of the time, etc...

I also have several old Begonian magazines, news letters and articles as well from various begonia growers and organizations. I also attend the local begonia club meeting when I can.

It really is well worth the effort to search out what books are available now because I'm sure they are much prettier in form and have stunning pics in them and of course would have the newer varieties in them.

If you can get a clear pic of any begonia you I will be glad to help you ID it to the best of the information I have. You can email me the info & and I'll do my best. I can also send you to some pretty cool websites and if you are looking for something in particular I can scan some of the info for you & send it by email if you would like.

Begonias were the first plant addiction fell victim to when I started gardening years ago. I did have a nice collection at one time but time takes it's toll on everything even gardens.:)
