Need some advice

Lecanto, FL(Zone 9b)

Had to emergency plant 4 brugs today during the heat. Put all 4 in clay pots with a good soil mix. The problem is that while I was digging out one of them, it had decided on changing the direction of its tap root without telling me or getting my permission. As a result, about 80% of it got hacked off. There were still quite a few of the little feeder root, so scolded her and planted her in the pot. All 4 are wilting somewhat, but have been watered thoroughly. I say all this to ask...whats the odds on the shorty pulling through? Its an no named pink one about 18 inches or so.

If you keep it in the shade until it perks up and gradually give it more sun it should recover OK. Al

I agree with Calistoga, leave in the shade for a while.

Generally Jim, when you root prune, you need to take off the same amount from the top so the roots left can support the top. But at 18 inches not much to take off. I would clip off the bigger leaves. They will no doubt fall off on their own if you don't. Don't over water even if limp, just water when dry. You can mist the leaves.

Good Luck!

Kell and Callistoga.....Thank you both for your input. Will follow your advice.

Kell......I wasn't really root pruning...the tap root was in the wrong area and when I put in my shovel to dig up the brug, the tap was accidentally chopped off. I will trim the leaves in the morning. And hopefully all will go well. Thnx again

I realized that, but it is the same as root pruning. LOL. Just accidentally. Though the feeder roots are more important so hopefully you should be fine.

Let us know how you do! The hardest thing for me is to see them wilted and not water. But I have learned the hard way not to water them unless dry, you just rot them with with watering too mcuh.

Just a side note....This morning all 4 of the little jewels were standing straight and wouldn't know they were ever wilted...Even the one with the stubby tap root.
