Passiflora parritae

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

My DH and I were at the Strybing Arboretum, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco yesterday. We were in their Chile garden and saw this tree with incredible orange flowers. They were so high up I had a hard time getting a good picture. I thought it was flowers on the tree Clethra suaveolens. I just googled the tree to find out more about it and I found that the flowers are from a passion flower growing up into the tree, Passiflora parritae.

It is one of the rarest passion flowers. They are having a horrible time trying to get seeds. It is almost extinct. I found out all about it on this site:

This site has great pictures and close ups.
