Had a thrill with AeAe

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have wanted one of these forever it seems. I actually bought one a year or 2 ago, and it was dead with in a month.

They have a huge one at the San Francisco's Conservatory of Flowers. I just loved seeing it yesterday.

It was hard getting good pictures, that place is so crowded with treasures.

Woohoooo....I can only wish! Kell, that is soo pretty.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Those are beautiful! I don't ever seeing me pay $100+ for one.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Quit droolin ya'll this plant is very hard to keep alive in containers, does best in the ground, ours at work(before it collapsed and died) even had striped bananas on it.many pups, (they all died in containers) even mine at home the last pup just died a few weeks ago.Terribly water sensetive, too much (daid!) too little it never pups, go figure, there is even a basjoo type that is variegated like this plant now.terribly rare(came from a tissue culture sport) This is one of those I wish I had but not worth the trouble plants(and the expense $100 a pup).

kell, I went there last year and I think it was the start of my moving towards tropicals. The one thing I came away with visiting this place is I want a greenhouse someday.
Heres my shot to give a reference as to the size of this thing, its in the background on the left.
And here is my link from last year, I look at these pics differently now that I am more serious about collecting tropicals. I think I need to go again. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/448908/

I wonder if I planted it in the ground IN the GH?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I love your thread Sue. I loved the place. I am going back often if I have to beat my man to go. LOL. I need to go thru and pick my best shots for a thread too.

I got practically all my names but when I got home none were legible. I am so mad at myself. I crawled under plants to pull the little tag. The writing was so small on them. A few I need so I can find them to buy. I have to have them to be happy!!

CC, Mel has one that she even forces it to dormancy in the winter and it keeps coming back for more. I wonder if she plants it in the ground then digs it.

I am going to try one more time, though I know Kyle is right. But I am going to wait till spring and put it in the ground so it gets a good start before fall. And if it dares to die then I am going to kill it.

I want what is growing up that wall...

Ely, the one in Sue's pic? I t is Philodendron speciosium. It is huge, in a way a mess. I think they should trim it back some so you can see it all better. The center of the room is just a tangled mess. Hard to make too much out anymore.

It actually is the center focal point in a round room. Tons of other trees are planted all around it on all sides. So in places you can't even see it as you walk the circle.

Here is a pic looking up.

Just saw the last part...ely, that Philodendron speciosium is the largest speciman in cultivation and is over 100 years old.
