Floralights

in Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi everyeone,
This morning I went yard sale hopping in our subdivision. . I found a floralight for $35.00, but I got it for $17.00. It came with bulbs and books too. I have never priced one , but I was sure I had a deal. It belonged to a elderly lady who passed away. It looks brand new. She grew orchids. I know she would be happy knowing I will be growing AV and orchids too. I also purchased a tall shepard hook poll for my hanging basket. for $3.00. I am so thankful to have found these great finds. I hope everyone has a wonderful day too. "S"

Patti,
Your violets will love being under your Floralight. Years ago I collected African violets. At that time I was living in a trailer with two bedrooms. My husband converted one of the bedrooms into a room just for my violets. He built wooden shelves that attached to the walls and wired them so flourescent light fixtures (4' shop lights) hung above each row of plants. The plants were anywhere from 8' - 10" below the lights. I usually used one cool white and one warm white bulb in each fixture (couldn't afford the more expensive ones for plants). I kept the pots setting in pebble trays with water. I always had some that were blooming, even in the dead of winter.

Thanks for the help Shirley.
I am planning to set this up in one part of my garage for the winter. It doesn't get cold here , so they should be fine. As they bloom I will swtich out the Av I have in my livingroom , so I can have continuous blooms. That is my plan. lol I will let you know if it works out ..
Thanks again my friend.

I agree, cicada--some violets, in particular, LOVE artificial lights. I've got a few (Buckeye Butterflies, Beca's Botswana, Optimara Super Minis) that will only bloom under fluorescent lights. And, I'm doing it jiggin' style--I buy a normal little lamp, then stick in a GroBulb. Well, and upstairs, I have shop lights in my built-in shelving........I'll post a pic sometime........needless to say, that's an awesome deal you got. I'm so pleased for you.
