Hi all!
I have 2 Hummingbird feeders - one is a plastic cylinder that is semi-enclosed in a cedar frame with a little peaked cedar roof - very cute & the hummers love it. The other is a round plastic ball-type - just a cheapy that I picked up for a couple of bucks on sale.
While my wood-enclosed feeder gets lots of visits, my ball feeder is still completely full & I only see a hit once in awhile. I'm thinking that perhaps with our brutally hot weather, the wood-framed feeder is shaded somewhat, while the plastic ball is probably nearly at the boiling point.
Since I see a lot of hummers down around my barn, which sits up against the woods, was wondering if perhaps I should hang the ball feeder off a tree branch down there? I often see a male & female Ruby-Throat down there & believe that they have nest up in one of the extremely tall mature hardwoods, as I see them frequently flying up & out from there.
Good idea? Bad idea? Think it will attract other woodland varmints?
Relocating Hummingbird Feeder?
I hung a feeder in my fig tree and it gets emptied more than the one hanging on a pole out in the sun. Maybe they like the shade or the cover of the leaves. Becky
It's a good idea to hang it from your tree to give the feeder some shade. In the sun the nectar goes bad at a really quick rate.
