Hi,
I have a couple Hoyas. The 1st I got about 12 years ago from a leaf that I started from a friend's plant. she lives in Oregon & I live in Central Illinios. It has bloomed the last few years, but only 1 or 2 blooms on it. I think it is the more common one. I've also started a 2nd from it.
I have another one that I bought at a local market that is variegated, but most of the plant has turned green with the splotches on it. Does anyone know what I need to do to get more of the variegated leaves to grow on it?
Until I found this forum, I had no idea that there were so many varieties or that there were collectors of them. Learn something new all the time.

A couple Hoya
They look like carnosas to me .......nice plants...you are doing something right with them....I am sure someone else will help you out with your other questions....your on your way to becoming a hoya addict now that you found this forum!....welcome Jan :)
Sandy
Like I need another addiction. I have hosta, starting on daylilies, also have pulmonaria, cranesbills, & other shady plants. Then I also collect 100% cotton material for quilts. :)
If you don't want another addiction, I strongly suggest you just back out of this forum as quickly as possible and forget you were ever here or even know about it, ha, ha! It's very, very dangerous to hang out here. I think a lot of us went to a hoya forum to ask a question about our one hoya.....then we found out about all the other beautiful hoyas.... and their beautiful flowers..... and their wonderful fragrances, and then there was no stopping us! :-D
Beautiful plants! It's my understanding that the varigated one (Krimson Princess) can put out vines that want to revert back to their parent (green carnosa). They should be cut off, or they will overtake the plant as they grow faster than the varigated vines. I may be wrong, and I'm sure others with more knowledge and experience will come in and give advice.
Looks like you bought a variegated H. carnosa which had a lot of green growth on it (the variegation is an anomoly...and sometimes will revert back to what it "used to be"). Without cutting out the solid green leaves (which grow more vigorously than the variegated leaves) the solid green has taken over.
All I could suggest is that you cut OUT the variegated stems and root those, cutting out the solid green stems that emerge and you will have two plants from one!!
HTH,
Carol
thanks for the advice, but you know how it goes - once bitten....
Anyway, I was thinking that perhaps I should cut the green parts off, as with a hosta a variegated one that gets green leaves will revert back to the all green form, so we have to cut that part out. But not knowing much about Hoyas, didn't know if that held true for them or not. My DD in Indiana got a variegated one the same time I got mine & hers has stayed true.
I didn't know there were fragrant hoyas until reading this forum. I don't think the one I have is fragrant or if it is, it didn't put out much smell. I'd like to get a couple that are fragrant & produce more blooms.
Hostanquilts, from what I've read on the forums the lacunosa seems to be a favorite. Great fragrance and blooms very frequently. I just got mine recently and it hasn't bloomed yet. Others will probably give other recommendations on fragrant ones.
OMG, and you started them both from leaves? What patience you have. Know what ya mean about addictions. I have been bitten by the daylilie bug myself this year. I purchased 12 Spider/UFO lilies, and thought I would get a jump start on next years wish list, close to 30 more I would just love. I just figured the inside was pretty cluttered up with Hoya's so I had better get to working on the outside. You will with out a doubt fall in love with Hoya's. My favorite bloomer is H. verticillata, repeat blooms all summer and very fragrant. Welcome, Tammy
Thank you for your kind words & welcome. I love all plants, but some seem to especially attract my attention. I'm not sure how I'm going to add to my Hoya addition. Just drooll over all yours. hehe
You might end up having to change your name to Hoyanquilts! :)
Thanks Mary, I needed a laugh. You are great!!
Jan, you should try a bella.....they are easy to grow and quite a pretty fragrance too i find although not as strong as the lacunosa...i think you will have a lot to add to your collection after reading all the posts in here....lol
I noticed Nan mentioned her 100 year old carnosa in the "houseplants" forum....cant even imagine owning a plant that old....the base must be very woody...very interesting....
Sandy
Sandy, Where would I get a bella? I haven't seen any Hoya in the nurseries around here. They mostly carry garden plants. The 1 Hoya I did find was in a grocery store. that was the variegated one. The green ones came from the 1 leaf starter from a friend in Oregon.
A 100 YO plant must be huge. I know the 2 big ones that I have are a little over 10 years old & they keep sending out vines. What are those called on a Hoya?
Jan
It will be easy to add hoyas to your collection. Most hoyas are kept as hanging or windowsill houseplants , and the plants you are allready collecting are outside planter and landscape plants. So....very compatable. I have all those things also, plus LOTS of hoyas.
You are just discovering however that the only ones you can usually find at most nurserys and plant outlets are just a few of the common varieties. For the more unusual ones, you have to order from special nurserys that carry them, or....trade with other people who have them. or....there is always Ebay.
Marcy
I don't think I'll buy off Ebay. I've been burnt a couple times from some things I bought on ebay.
I wonder does anyone on here want to trade Hoya for Hosta?
Jan
HI Jan,
I could be wrong, but i doubt you will find Hoya bella in the nurseries...more like you say, variegated carnosas seem to be the most common to pick up at the supermarkets.....since you are in the US though, you have so much variety online to choose from....your so lucky....up here in Canada, obtaining hoyas is a bit more difficult since there isnt as many nurseries etc to buy from within Canada for hoyas, online or in person...try http://davesgarden.com/gwd/ for online sources....hope that helps...
Sandy
Thanks Sandy, I'll look the onlines places up.
