Yesterday my newest order popped in from FL.
Here's Alocasia advincula.
It's easy to see where it got the name Batwing Alocasia.
Also easy to see why this is Enid's favorite Alocasia.
Ric
Another yard newbie.
Neat looking plant. Did that one come from the same place as the other ones?
Yes it is from Natural Selections Exotics.
We also picked up a "Borneo Giant" while we were at it.
The Alocasia advincula has a runner just breaking the surface.
All the others have thrown a new leaf already.
Even the BG which we just got yesterday. lol
Ric
That's pretty cool looking. I've never heard of that one before.
Rj
Another neato plant!
:) Donna
You just cannot beat plants like that - healthy and raring to grow!
Nice!! I like the stem markings
We've had day temps in the low/mid 90's, humid and sunny for weeks.
Night temps in the low/mid 70's w/ humidity in the 90% range.
They really must think they're still sitting at home in FL. lol
Ric
make sure you let that one dry out.....

I can't afford this forum. I see, I want, I get. I used to have restraint. I will say my last box from Enid was fantastic. Not the little starts you get elsewhere.
Henry, do you have a huge GH?
Thanks ely.
I'd heard "Lutea' was a bit prone to rot also.
It's sound advice for most Alocasia.
When I first got into Aroids I had some good tips from a grower here.
He said in Summer rhizomous Colocasia can live in water.
All the others like a little drying time.
Come winter think of them ALL as Succulents.
If you see growth water sparingly, if none then give them none.
It's worked well.
Ric
kell,
No we have a little red house :)
Sorry I couldn't resist that.
We have a barely heated 9x12 hoop house where we do Succulents and extend the Tomato season. It stays just above freezing at night.
A heated 9x12 Plant Room where we winter the small tender and orchid pots.
(About 100 pots or so)
It also houses our Vivarium where the Green Sheild and A. cuprea and other small tropicals hang out.
And the front porch turns into a GH for Winter.
That's where the bananas and macro and odora winter over.
Ric
WOW Sounds like you have a willing partner that is as plant nuts as you are. I wish I did, mine thinks I need psychiatric help, fast. Here he is yesterday at a plant walk we went on. His idea of fun is to walk straight ahead and stop for nothing. LOL. I have tons of pictures like this, he is always ahead trying to get it over with as fast as possible.
LOL!
That's me hiking!
But NEVER in a situation like that!
Where is that?
We do Southern CA and short of the San Diego Zoo I've never seen anything that tropical.
Ric
It is in the Strybing Arboretum, in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. We walked thru the Arboretum after we went thru the Conservatory, Hall of Flowers. This part is directly across from the Conservatory. It is a long path and has tons of these tree ferns. It is just beautiful.
We also saw a very rare passion flower. It was incredible.

Kell at lease he goes with you, or takes you to the places you like to go. My DH would go and he would stay with me and he would make remarks like very nice "but" you don't need it or have room for it.
Linda
My partner likes the plants, the effect and working them but...she's more a giant hosta/fern/flowering perennial/annual person.
I do the exotics/tropicals.
We consult on the big projects. Then I design and build them.
(Except our plantroom and fence. She can now run a chop saw w/ the best of them! lol)
We consult on the ponds then she builds them.
(I tweak the pumps and stones for the best sound)
When we do tours we spend hours though.
We did San Diego Zoo and the SD Wild Animal Park in two seperate 6 hour days. (Our usual tour time)
The Zoo alone deserves 2 days.
Ric
My DH's favorites are Coleus that have the purples in them, he isn't fond of the plain green ones. He also loves the EE's, Castor Beans, Hibiscus but he doesn't seem to like the Brugs yet. I finally had my first bloom last week, our DGD was visiting so I didn't get a picture posted in the Brug section. But it is has buds that are close to opening now. He thinks the flower should open toward the sun and not hang down toward the ground. I told him if I had more then 1 bloom it would look much better then a single one. Then of course the one that is blooming doesn't have a fragrant to it at all. I think once he retires and has more time on his hands he will get into gardening. Whenever I need a new flower bed built he always helps me. Or when it is time to water he goes to all my EE's and dumps the 5 gal. buckets on them. He is some help, that is when he doesn't have a Bass tournament going.
Linda
We haven't been to the San Diego zoo for 23 years. I think we are due to go back. LOL
Ric, you are so lucky to be on the same page as your partner. It must make for more home happiness. Though to be honest because my yard is so small, If Tom demanded equal planting rights, I would have to kill him off. And I would too. LOL
Oh Linda, my husband is the same. He frowns at my habit, though I must be honest, most people would . LOL. I am so out of control. Last night he complained to my son about having to go to San Francisco on Saturday. He said I seem not to get that most people do not share my love. He said I took way too long. We did it all in 3 hours. I do not know how I could go any faster. He said next time he is bringing a book. So at least there is going to be a next time. LOL
This is what I want next.
kell, next time call me, I can go up anytime and will even drive! I am in the same boat as my husband wouldnt indulge me even that long. I could easily spend 3+ hours there taking pics, making notes and just sighing. By the way, that was my favorite area in the conservatory above, the pond.
Kell
oooooooh that pond is soooooo pretty
Kyle had one like that
maybe he would come to Calif & help you :-)
Rik
Calif is over a 1000 miles long, 6 zones i think
we have every kind of climate you can think of
i have neighbors growing bananas year round
i have Orchids outside year round
i have a 30 ft tall tree fern
Dick
Quit bragging Dick!! LOL. Dick lives way south of me. I am in the cold north. Soon Dick will be too. LOL
I spent a month one year and drove from San Diego to Canada.
(Well actually from TJ...but THAT'S another story)
I pretty much skipped right thru LA and really started slowing down at Santa Barbara.
It was an interesting experience to say the least.
I really love WA but if someone gave me the money could easily settle in San Francisco.
There's just too much to do to have to work! lol
Ric
Hmmmm...
Ah been there....done that.
Anything newer? LOL!
Ric
