We had to say goodbye to Hobbes today. He was diagnosed with renal failure last month, so we knew that he wasn't going to be with us much longer. The end came quicker than we thought, he was ignoring food, even his favorites although he would take a bite or two. Last weekend he started vocalizing, crying out his discomfort. He would stop if I held him, but he didn't want to be held very long. He was lethargic, and the buildup of ketones was giving him an unpleasant odor.
Today, I decided that he had suffered enough, so he made his last visit to the vet. I brought him home and when DH came home we made a resting place for him behind the shrub roses in the back garden, wrapped up with his favorite mouse, and with tears we said our farewell. I have to admit he wasn't my favorite, but I didn't expect to burst into tears leaving the clinic, nor did I expect DH to choke up as he did. Poor little guy, Mini is going to miss getting her daily bath from him, and Oskar will be wondering where his buddy went . No more tuna hockey. No more drooling over the catnip. I'm very sad.
