CLOSED: HAVE: Bougainvillea cuttings "California Gold"

Ridgeville, IN(Zone 5a)

I have about 8 cuttings....each about 8-12 inches long. I'm almost positive this variety is "California Gold". It blooms a very pretty deep yellow/gold color. I container grow mine here, and it's outgrowing the trellis in the container. These would be softwood/semi-hardwood cuttings. I would like to trade for cuttings of other bougainvillea varieities/colors. I can do 4 trades of 2 cuttings each, or 2 trades of 4 cuttings each. Please indicate how many cuttings you would like. Thanks. :o) Jenny

Hey, Jenny! What do you do w/the cuttings? Stick in water? Do the growth hormone bit in mix? I've never done it before.......I've got a super vigorous fuschia (can't remember the hybrid) that's 3 years old, and a 'Raspberry Ice.' Never even thought about prop'ing them!

Hi Kathleen. I've never actually rooted them before. LOL But I've been doing alot of reading on the matter. Basically, from what I've read, you would dip the cutting in rooting hormone, then stick the cutting in a large styrofoam cup (or something of the like) filled with potting soil.....then place the whole thing cup and cutting into a plastic bag (the lady suggested like what newspapers come in)......tie the bag shut.....hang the bag up so that the plastic doesn't touch the cutting, place in the shade. She says 90% success rate....and she does this with roses as well.

I'm assuming you plant yours directly into the ground. Obviously here, I have to bring mine in. It's outgrowing the trellis now already....so it needs trimming.....then again in the fall when I bring it in, I'll have to really cut it back.

Did you want to set up a trade?

You know what? I actually have mine in hanging baskets! In winter, I bring it into the garage and hang from the rafters. It dies back and I water lightly about twice until spring, without feeding. Then, voila! New growth starts budding and I put it back out. =) The thing (pink one) is HUGE, and blooms heavily, due to a garden club member telling me to dump my leftover morning coffee (with creamer and sweetener!) into it. The thing is laden..........

Anyway, I'm still working on 'Raspberry Ice''s blooms.......getting some very variegated leaves (white and deep rose) w/the coffee though! I'll happily trade some cuttings to you.

Wow! I need tips on overwintering. LOL Is your garage heated? Does it get much light over the winter? Do you cut it back at all? I'm full of questions. LOL

You want 4 of my cuttings? And do you want to wait till Mon to mail so they don't sit over the weekend? I was going to wrap the cut end in wet paper towel, and put plastic wrap over that. You think that sounds ok?

I don't drink coffee.....but I might have to start. LOL

Hey, Jenny! My garage isn't heated, and has a window to the workshop (opposite end from where I keep my baskets), but we keep the wood blinds tipped at an angle. I don't do anything, other than cut the branches back (so that they don't gauge my car!), and "let" them croak. They're out there in the cold, in the dark, and with no attention, other than the couple of light waterings I give them (first year, didn't even do THAT!). Then, in early spring/late winter, they'll start getting buds! =)

I can do about three cuttings (my fuschia is blooming SO nicely, hate to chop too much!), and the 'Raspberry Ice' isn't too big yet, but does have a branch that is getting too long.

Monday's good........=)

Great info Kathleen. If I run out of room in my sunroom, maybe I'll move my bougie to the basement. Sounds like the conditions would be similar to your garage. :O)

You are in the addy exchange, right? I'll send on Monday as well.
