I just bought two Dwarf Nandina domestica - 'Firepower' http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/59692/index.html
from a local store. It didn't list the Zone (I hate that) but one would figure that if they are selling in your area as a perennial then it must be hardy to your zone. However, after looking it up in DG PlantFiles it is listed as Zone 6a while I am Zone 4a-b. Has anyone had any experience with these in the Zone 4 area? If not I may have to do a plant trade for them.
Brian
I may have to Trade these...
I'm sorry I don't have an answer, since I'm in zone 6, but I do have a suggestion...
Post over in the trees & shrubs forum, or maybe the Michigan gardening forum, with a subject line like "Hardiness of Dwarf Nandina?" I'll bet somebody will be able to answer your question right away. Posting here, you just get the attention of folks who trade plants, which I think is a smaller subset of DGers.
I grow a nice large potted Nandina on my sunporch (unheated) all year 'round.
It's pretty easy....just watch the watering.....and it's soooo cool to have green foliage on my porch in the dead of winter!
I recommend that you try it with at least one of them, if you have a place for it.
Ohhh Brian! Nandina is one of my most desired plants. I would try to mulch it really good and shelter it. I sure hope it comes back for you. Because it is sooo beautiful. Keep one and trade the other.
