I've been looking through the threads here and there's a lot of great plants, growers and troughs about but I thought a how not to might help someone who is fairly new to alpines and rock gardens.
This is one of my mistakes and I know better than to do this, I do it all too often though ... good intentions! I do it because I often come back from a nursery with armfuls of plants I've no immediate space to put so I plant them in shallow bowls. It's also something that some media gardeners do because it has instant effect for the TV. What I'm talking about here is planting fast growing plants in alpine troughs and pots.
In the photo we have a Juniper, Tanacetum haradjanii, Androsace lanuginosa and a Pterocephalus perennis, there is also a volunteer Digitalis which will need rehoming when the whole pot is redone.
Anybody else want to volunteer a how not to ;)
How not to do it.
How cute! I love the little duck that can barely keep its head above the surface. The little Juniper is wonderful too.
I don't know, Baa. This looks pretty good for a "how-not-to." Everything's still alive and looks quite happy, crowded or not.
I should have taken a picture of my rock garden BEFORE I removed the
1000's of seedlings from a pretty something (the tag got lost but it was
covered with gorgeous little pink blooms). I left it there too long - I saw the
seeds forming but just got too busy to worry about it. HUH! 1000's of babies
and I bet there's going to be more.

I bet we've all done this before!
