HELP!!!!! Don't know where to begin to fix the poor thing!!

Garner, NC(Zone 7b)

I have been given this Bird of Paradise. I have no idea what type it is and have never taken care of one but I figured I could get some great advice from you all and possibly bring the poor plant back to life. There are several leaves riped and I didn't know if I needed to remove them. And if I do what point is best on these plants to remove it from. There is also one that is broken. Again I have no idea where is best to remove the broken piece. Someone please let me know what I can do if anything!!!!

I would cut off the worst of the broken leaves, cutting the stem as close to the base as possible. It looks like it needs in a slightly bigger pot, don't go too much bigger, they like to be pot bound. Water and give a balanced fertilize, it will grow a new leaf soon.

and lots of sunlight..........makes the leaves stronger and the stems more compact. :-)

Thank you for the advice. I hit lowe's today and got a larger pot. Didn't get to doing anything but hopefully will tomorrow. I'll post pictures after the poor thing is repotted and would like more info as to keeping it up. Thanks again for everything and I hope I can help it :):)
