When is the best time to plant or move asparagus?

I have about 12 or 14 asparagus plants that are growing in a flower bed. Not sure how they got there, but I would like to move them, but need instructions on doing this & when the best time would be. Any body have any suggestions? My folks grew asparagus & I've lived several different places where there was asparagus growing, but have never planted or transplanted any.
