EEWWWW! I saw my first Tomato Horn Worm last summer. I had a 2.5ft datura with very full foliage. Came out one morning to find EVER SINGLE LEAF gone! I was dumbfounded! I looked all over the ground and couldn't find one piece. The stalks were were green and bare.. then all of a sudden John (hubby) grabbed my arm and pointed and said - "look there under that branch - what the heck is THAT??" It was HUGE! I grabbed my camera snapped a pic and posted it here somewhere asking for and ID - had one in a minute. John volunteered to squash the thing but I found out it would grow up to be a hummingbird moth and I really like those - so I told him to take it far out in the woods and let it go...

They sure have the most vorascious (sp?) appetite in the cat world.

I agree, eeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiikkkkkkkkkkkk, but they do become something lovely, but golly they can destroy something so quickly!

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Wow V8, what a picture. That is great!!! I don't care for that nasty worm, but it sure is a beauty when it grows up!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

The bigger they get the cuter they get. .... ha!

Tobacco Hornworms have seven diagonal white w/black lines on their sides and a curved red horn. This is what is pictured. It is more common than the Tomato Hornworm.

Tomato Hornworms are hummingbird moths. They have eight V-shaped solid white stripes on the sides and a black horn that is not as curved as the Tobacco worm.

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

So what does the Tobacco Hornworm grow up to be?

Muskegon, MI(Zone 5a)

Looks like its sitting up and begging...lolol....Judy

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I'm sorry. That was as clear as mud huh? They are both called hummingbird moths but the ToBACCO one is the most common.

Yes it does look like it's begging doesn't it. Too cute but bad teeth :)

There's about 16 different species. So many colors and patterns. Really neat looking. Too bad these guys are so destructive to brugs.

Laurens, SC(Zone 8a)

I had one of these on my Brug last week. It ate a leaf per day!! I finally moved it to another Brug with more leaves then the next day I found it at the top eating the newly opened leaves (where it is forming buds finally) so I knocked it off and it went away. What is it called?? Mine was pretty large--maybe 3-4" long?? Or longer?? Seemed longer each time I looked at it!! hehehe Cute but I did not want to sacrifice FLOWERS for it!! Bonnie

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

what do they grow up to be? i take it you're not supposed to kill them? I have seen these in my yard. They gross me out. I yes, they do have an appetite on them!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Seems like they grow right in front of your eyes. They can get as long as 4" and they feed for 3-4 weeks before they do their thing and fly away. I'm never lucky enough to see that part.

Poor little baby :) Can you hear him screaming "Help I've fallen and I can't get up?". lol!

If yours looks like the picture then it is a Tobacco Hornworn.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

vossner it is the sphinx/hawk/hummingbird moth :)

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

friend or foe?

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

As a cat he is foe. As a moth he is friend.

This is a hummimgbird moth. I do not know the species.

WOW that is a big one, I know that they are out there some where I see all the signs of them have only found one so far, I also have huge grasshoppers this year that are feasting on my plants and big chunks taken out of my Brugs and I still can't find the critters in order to eliminate them.

LOL !!!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Check it out! I'm amazed that this one came out so pretty! Wormie needs shoes.

I'd love to get a shot of him actually eating but everytime I try he just curls his head and shows those white suction cups like they are teeth. I guess he wants to look ferocious at both ends. His actual head is tiny!

Ah, we have those moths...call them Sphinx Moths or Wolf Moths. They do a lot of pollinating of hoya. The cat is called the Horned Cucumber Cat - defoliated a few big leaves and are in Cat Heaven now!!!

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Omgosh this is too cute! LOL I don't think he'll find any shoes his size lol they be way too fat and plus lol...how will he get up the trunk of the tree with shoes on...???....UNLESS ...he gets the fat shoes with suction cups !!! LOL Way too funny.

Hey, I wonder if you kidnapped the brug he's eating from and brought it inside to a screened in porch could you watch him progress into a moth...giving us a play by play Vicki???? huh huh huh? lol puhhhhhhhhh-leeeeeeeeeeeese?? lol

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Thanks Carol! I couldn't find anything that refers to them as Horned Cucumber Cat. I wonder if it is a local nick name in Hawaii? I've sent a few to heaven before too. This one is special because he is one of two that I watched hatch from the egg.

Juliie, cleets are the answer!

Funny thread. I've disposed of a few of them this year. Any of the little green critters still out there will just have to fill up to their heart's content.

Aberdeen, NC

I didn't know they had Beer Ness monsters! Beer will never be the same. LOL
I love the track shoes, too!!

Good to see you Brugie - I hope you are feeling better!!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi, Shirley, hope you are much, much better.

In the first pic of the hornworm, he looks as if he has indigestion and needs to burp. lol

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

LOL Grannie, this is way too funny!

Oh Cool!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

You should him in heels!

I've identified him as a Carolina sphinx.
I also learned there's 1000 (+ or -) species in the world. 100 in the USA.

Waaaah! I can't see him Linda. My monitor is too dark. :(

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

I can barely see him myself. He scared me flying around, and I saw him in the flash.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Is this any better?

Yes! I can see it! Cool! I wonder what he pollinated that flower with? Too bad you can't give him a list and some tags and put him to work.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Linda!! That is a gorgeous night shot. The moth is cool but who's the brug?

Vicki - are you talking about Monsters in the Mist? Hope you didn't mind me playing with the pic but I saw alien monster heads. (Then I had some shaman visions...) or vice versa

Thanks Blaine, When I received the cutting, it was identified as Frosty Pink. I was later told that it was not 'Frosty'. I was going to ask Vicki if she thought it might be Isabella. Same plant just opened 4 or 5 today. I'll take photos tomorrow.

beautiful pics I love them
