2nd bloom from seed - Aurea Pink x Golden Lady

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

hybridizer ReneeO
seeds planted 1/29/05.

If nothing else, it may be a reference for others thinking about this cross. This is just the first seedling to bloom. I have 3 others from that same batch which may bloom differently.

This is the 2nd bloom which opened this afternoon.
This is about as wide as she opens and the 1st has remained white. They open before dark, do not fully close and tendrils took the heat. This has been strong foliage plant in a 1/2 barrel container that has caught all of our west winds and has never wilted.
Nice fragrance a little on the citrusy like others. I'll have to check again tonight.
Thanks Renee!

I was surprised this afternoon how early it opened.
That is a nice trait to be able to enjoy it before it gets dark and the skeeters come out.

How did I miss this thread??

Blaine, she is gorgeous! I love her long tendrils and the way she's wavy, NICE BRUG! And I love her Color, LOOK at the size of that girl! Congrats to you and ReneeO :-)

You are a great Brug Daddy!!!

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Thank you friends.
Well, in 10 months I've revived bedraggled mailorder cuttings, rooted my own in water and potting mix, took seeds from peeling to bloom, did the log thing and fought some mites. Guess if I get a pod from my pollinating paintbrush that completes the circle and probably to move on to something else. So what's a Hoya Carol?

Tulsa, OK(Zone 7a)

Beautiful.. great pictures...

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

I keep coming back to this, don't you just LOVE love love that waxy look she has? Ahhhhhh what a pretty girl!

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Congratulations to both of you!! She's lovely!!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I love the ruffles. A beautiful flower.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Blaine, you are more fickle than I am. I am feeling the need for a brug break too though. Have you gone tropical yet?? I am being pulled in that direction. Gingers, and EEs and heliconia OH MY!! Lions and tigers and bears OH MY!!!

I am having a torrid affair with flax and a summer fling with Abutilons. Oh my cheating heart.

Love your new white wonder. She is a beaut!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I didn't add my latest flax picture. They come in all kinds of pink. LOL

Oh, I love those tendrils! I've got a couple of them, too. Mine have buds, so now I REALLY can't wait. 'Hope mine are half as nice.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Interesting, she has a Gardenia appearance, and I love her frilly skirt, she is a flirt!! Yet, she's also elegant, with her well fitting calyx, each tipped on the end, showcasing her lovely blossom, she's a high style, designer brug!! Congrats, Blaine and Renee!!!

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Tks all.
Three days and the original bloom still looks good. Got staying power.
I guess what I'm really supposed to do is carry it over a 2nd year to see if it changes, huh?

Flax is power statement isn't it Kell? Closest to trops is the cannas, some ears(driving me nuts with their extreme drinking problem) and that blue ginger I got in a hot swap. Having to take full plants in the house for the winter will keep a lid on trops I think. Things I can bag, tag and throw in a container in the basement is doable.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

she is lovely.
I am still trying to find out why none of my brugs have any Pollen, I read in one ot the posts that someone else was having the same problem, can anyone answer this for me.

Blaine, I like her. The frills are nice. I hope she continues to do well for you. Renee is coming down today. I'll have to make sure she sees this.

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Blaine, I'm glad you ask about what 'Flax' is, cos' when I asked it was lost in the thread and never answered. I believe people wait 2 years because it could be this way one year and next year it could turn out different...but after that pretty much they stay the same. I've had one do this, it changed the following year and it was even better :-)

You have a beautiful girl there, and I wanted to say I hope to see some pods of your's by Fall! You Go Boy! lol (I know it should have been 'man') LOL

Doris, mine have zilch for pollen too, and I can you that as fast as they open, the bee's come in to feast lol...that's my story and I'm stickin' to it LOL! I found mold on one of the blooms...it's so humid here, Argh!

Mc Call Creek, MS

I think the lack of pollen is due to the heat and humidity. Mine always produce much more when it cools off in the fall. 'Makes it hard to pollinate them that late, especially when most of my plants are in the ground and too big to put in the greenhouse. I found out last year that you can air-layer a limb with a pollinated flower on it pretty easily. I did that last year and just put that limb in the GH for the winter. The pods developed just fine. They would probably do the same thing in a well-lighted windew in the house.

Kay

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

What a great idea Kay, I may try that this year. I have found that pollen is much better in the Fall too. Maybe take some and freeze it for the Spring blooms. :-)

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Thanks for your answers, glad it has nothing to do with me lol and it has been unusually hot and humid this year.

Doris

Mc Call Creek, MS

Er, uh, y'all DO know what a windew is, huh? I think it's one of those glass things in a house that you can look out of.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

HA = Blaine...saw you found t he hoyas!!! They are a tropical vine...extremely varied in leaf, growth pattern, flower and scent! Tons of fun....I have about 200 different species...or more. They clamber up my trees, hang in pots, crawl into eachothers pots...a very social group!!!

Kalola

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Oh, how exciting ... really pretty!! Congratulations Blaine and Renee.

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Yeah Carol, seems every winter I need something new to fool with inside. Started ordering and growing various tree seeds several years ago. One year had a bench full of pineapple tops and avocado seedlings. Tested to see if petunias would start from cuttings. Yeah they do! Had 20 of them blooming in the basement in Feb.

So decided to try the Hoyas and I might even take a couple to the office. ?

Anyone who's watching this thread - This APxGL cross is kind of impressing me. The original bloom now shows a little age along some edges. It's opened more blooms and I've been in 90s with humidity and yesterday a pretty stiff south wind. Hasn't phased it. I've sprayed with water from the hose. No problem - still the pristine ruffled white.
This was fun.

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

Thanks for the update!

Ashton, IL(Zone 5a)

8ft, I've been watching this thread and I really like this one. Most of the seedlings I've grown out have been pink with only 1 white and it was one of those long drooping versicolor blooms. This white is a more attractive bloom IMO and it's heat resistance and lasting power are just frosting on the cake!

Blaine, keep on keeping those pineapple tops! In about two years they will grow you a wonderful edible pineapple! I've got one just about ready to eat, and it has a new top to plant, along with a pup to plant to make another. FRESH pineapples are worth the wait!

(Just ask Carol!)

Kay

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Oh I know about pineapples! The first time I was stationed in Pearl Harbor me and a buddy went out to a local laundrymat to do clothes. There was a little store behind and grabbed a pineapple. Sat out back and ate the whole thing. Bad idea!! Ascorbic Acid is a key word. For several days my tongue felt like I'd dragged it down a mile of asphalt. :0

I traded all the ones I got to root that year at the spring plant swap.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I just realized I have no clue how a pineapple grows. LOL. I have an image of a tree with pineapples hanging down from it. I stopped in Lanai so I know I knew once. LOL I guess I better go google it.

When I was in Hawaii every morning I started with pineapple. The pineapple here just does not taste like it does there. It was a taste sensation!

Carol, I have my first hoya, a variegated one. Well, actually I had one years ago that took over my dining room. The typical one that is sold all over here. I sure hope it doesn't start something though. No room in my house or my mind for a new interest. They must be so intriguing though for I know 3 people who love them now. You , Mel and Patricia. And now I bet Blaine will be added to the list. A goner. LOL

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

psssst! Kell - you'll have to fill me in on your previous success with the variegated one since I may need some help. There's four enroute to me already!
Happily Obeying Your Addictions

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Blaine, I haven't been successful yet. The variegated one is new to me, on my seedling table getting acclimated to life with Kell. So far it hasn't run away from home or died in protest.

I have a feeling you will be so far ahead of me in a very short time. LOL

Thumbnail by Kell
Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

my bad - I thought the one you had before was variegated.
My challenge will be temperature extremes and how it can get dry in the house in the winter with the heater running. I'm thinking the guest bedroom with the aquarium may be the ticket.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

The one I had years ago did great in the dry house Blaine. I could be totally wrong here but I do not think they like lots of water. Watch it be a rain forest plant. LOL

It used to flower like crazy but then the flower cluster would drop all the little blooms, it was meassy in the house. It also got mealy bug. But I had it for years. I can't remember how it met its end. I do remember the day I got it though. A nurse in the hospital where I worked brought it in to me. She had just left her husband and his mother and took the plant with her. LOL She had daggers in her heart for the mother.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Have I just not seen the right hoya, I've only seen them online, but, of the ones I've seen, the flower looks like an after dinner mint, huh?? Sorta waxy - now, if it smells like heaven, that's a totally different story...

I'm a little late here.. Sorry Blaine.LOL
You sure have done well this year with all your Brugs. Congrats on your beauties you have grown from seed. !!Job Well Done!! You Hosser You
:-)

Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

from one Hoser to another, thanks Kin. heh, heh
all of a sudden they're predicting chances of daily rains the next 2 weeks. Kind of takes the takes the wind out of watering scam.

LOL!!
