foamy-bubbles water help

Dansville, NY(Zone 6a)

right at the waterfalls im starting to get alot of bubbles
that dont disapate just float on the surface of the water.
I can scoop them up with the fishnet to remove them but
they just come back.
I read on one site i could add a de-foaming agent to the pond.
well there isnt any pond store here unless i drive 50 miles to the
city and hope Lowes / HD have something, Or order something off the
net and wait for the mailman.

is there anything i can use that I could find in a common store or supermarket ?

Could be your ponds way of getting rid of excess protein/nutrients. Think of the foam in ocean surf. I've not had that problem in my pond yet. Fish tanks can do the same thing. Maybe add more plants, feed the fish less, add some bacteria to the pond or, depending upon the size, do a partial water change. Just a few ideas.

How many fish are in your pond, Sparky? It sounds like it's surface scum (proteins, etc., as daisy mentions). I use a protein skimmer to keep my surface tidy and clear, but at this very moment, I am ready to rent a backhoe and fill the whole thing in ..... (my skmmer experiences this year have been wretched)

I got 7 small fish , a mixture of koi , comets and shubunkins
there all under 4 inches in size.

You don't think any of your drinking buddies have ... uh ... shall we say, "taken liberties" with your pond?

Personally,,,If your water readings are good...I wouldnt worry...I wouldnt add anything either but then I am a "less is best" chemical person. Fish spawning can cause bubbles too.

We had that for about 8 months after we first got the waterfall working on our pond. Didn't do anything except add a couple water lilies and now there are no bubbles. the bubbles looked like shampoo and covered the whole surface at one time.

I made up a sack of activated charcoal and placed on the top of the biofilter
right where the discharge is, Still have the bubbles but there not as bad.
the fish love them, silly buggers playing tag under them.

I thought my location was far from major stores! It used to be farther, but the area is developing so rapidly, and new shopping centers and restaurants are filling the area. I can't answer your question, but I hope you find an answer.

I get that problem occassionally. When it occurs it always is associated (in my pond) with increased spawning behavior. Think of it this way: you've got one or more very sexy young female fish just flirting just out of reach of the males; the males represent a bunch of teenage boys that have each taken three, double doses of viagra swallowed with two cans of Jolt (extra high sugar and caffine!!!). You shouldn't be too surprised under the circumstances to see a bit of extra protein in your pond. It is amazing how fast they can swim and the extent that they will continue in their game of "chase"!! :-))

Hmmm. Sounds like a fish story to me! LOL

here is a pic of the falls and foamy bubbles, now its just about gone since adding the
charcoal, just a few patches of it 2 to 3 inches around.

Have you recently added any medication to the pond? I get bubbles just like that when I put Melafix or Pimafix in mine.

Dansville, NY(Zone 6a)

nope on medications or anything, only thing i have done was add
20 gals of water ( treated to remove chlorine ).

Its alot better now since the addition of charcoal.
