What do you feed your fish??

Someone said they feed their fish dog food-they never said what kind or brand they used-just that their fish liked it. Would love hearing the kinds food you feed your fish. Thanks.

Don't feed your fish dogfood. It contains oils that add luster to thier coats and it forms a flim over the top of the pond water that can suffocate the fish there in. I use pellet type food in my 7x13 pond for my goldfish, (no koi) that I buy at walmart and they love it! Tanarae

I feed the Goldfish flakes. They seem to thrive on it.

Last year my fish loved the pellet for koi & this year they won't eat it,they love & eat the flake kind this year-I guess their taste change like ours.I have feed them, thinly sliced zucchini squash & they loved it.

Hikari Gold, mostly because it's a premium food and it's really easy for me to find locally. If I goldfish and comets, I would definitely not spend this sort of money, though. I wholeheartedly agree with Tana about the dog food. Just say "No."

Thanks so much Buck-can you find Hikari Gold @ Petsmart? We don't have too many choices here where to buy fish food except for Petsmart or Walmart.

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Actually, it's either a Petsmart or PetCo where I pick mine up.

Thanks Buck-will try Petsmart,we don't have a PetCo.

Buffalo, WV(Zone 7a)

A friend of mine who has a pond told me recently about running out of Hikari food for her koi, she bought some food at Walmart and the koi started eating the pond plants. Guess they were getting something from the Hikari food that is missing in some of the cheaper foods.
Lana

Thanks Lana for the info-will try & find some Hikari.
I sure hope Petsmart will have it.

I feed my fish cheerios and they love them. I know, I know only koi food is recommended. My gold koi, Ole Yella, grew from 6" last fall to about 14" so far this summer. All my fish look and act healthy so at least it is not hurting them.

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

You exclusively feed them Cheerios????

Loretta-I bet Ole Yella is a beauty,if you have a picture of him-would love to see him.I am going to have to buy some cheerios & see how my water babies like them:)

Oak Grove, MN(Zone 4a)

Hikari is a really good fish food. I always feed a pellet food outside, it is less messy than flakes. You know, I've heard that about dog food before, but I sure wouldn't try it with my fish! I did know a woman who only fed her fish cooked rice and they were huge, but I doubt rice is a balanced diet for fish.

Here are a few pictures of my fish.

You would think this one might be a little scared with all these fish heading towards it at full speed. But he has his cherrio scoped out and it is not getting away.

I feed mine pellet fish food, a lot of catfish farms around here you can get it cheap. I also feed them some of those garden veggies that got away, like the big yellow cukes that got missed I just whip out the pocket knife and slice them about 1/4 inch thick and toss a few in, they seem to love them. They also like oranges, grapefruit slices and loose leaf lettuce too. Must do something good for them they breed like rabbits .... hmmm maybe it because I'm feeding them rabbit foods.

I have been getting the Tetra Pond Koi Vibrance at Pets Mart. They float for well and my Koi and Shibunkins love it. However here lately it went up in price (doubled), that I have been ordering it from Drs Foster and Smith http:/www.drsfostersmith.com online. I can order ten pounds and pay shipping too and still save money over Pets Mart's price. But after this thread, I may try a few cherrios!! I will have to figure up the cost per pound on that, since cereal isn't too cheap now days.

I like your frogs, they are cute! What kind are they? We have frogs or toads, but they only get in the water when laying eggs.

Loretta & Sheila, thanks for the pictures, your Koi are beautiful!!
And I love the frogs,too.

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

I ran out of KOI food a while back and wanted to feed them something. Had a bowl of oatmeal that had overcooked down to a blob. They all loved it. LOL
It sank down to the bottom like a rock. They ate it all. Going to use that for bait to lure the gold fish over a net so I can get rid of some of them.

Moscow, TN(Zone 7a)

lol, good luck I have been trying to catch some of my baby koi and shebunkins to give away. Those littles suckers are fast and I have not been able to catch any of them. If anyone lives close by and wants some....come and get them.

Oh,Loretta-I sure wish I did-your fish are so beautiful!!
I only have 4 fish & would be there in a New York minute :)

Mobile, AL(Zone 8b)

I buy Koi food at the feed and seed store. $20.00 for a 25lb bag made by Mazuri.

tortoisekeeper-I wish they made smaller size bags-for 4 fish, the food would get old before they could eat all of it-so this would be expensive for me.I guest I need more fish :) Thank you for your information-it is appreicated. All information given here is appriecated-thank you.

edit:: to add maybe I need to trade for Koi food-to see which kind(s) of food my fish like best-they are picky eaters.

Fish food keeps well tightly sealed in the freezer.
