Who knows what this bug is, it is destroying all my blooms, and nothing I use seems to stop them, This is a bloom I just Pollinated two days ago with Pollen from Kell. today the whole thing was on the ground.
This could be THE LAST STRAW
I have those on mine too, I just squish them between my fingers and the leaves when I find them!
Doris, I'm sorry...you have really had quite a time of it this summer. Your unknown looks terrific though, I love the color.
I hope someone can tell you what in blazes this power eater is. I wish I could help.
hmmmm .... I don't know this critter. ... interesting that all of you live in roughly the same area.
Hellobebe, it has been one thing after another I talked with the only Nursery around here and they tell me this part of Indiana is not good for these type flowers as we have so many different bugs that are attracted to them, on the other hand they told me that Daturas are a torment to the farmers as once they start growing the farmers can't get rid of them they are considered a troublesome weed, and I have some planted and the bugs do not seem to like them at all.
Doris
I believe you have what I call the *(^*(&((*)(^&%% cucumber beetles! LOL The leave a sea of holes wherever they go. I am not sure on the exact name of the species but I think that is what they are. Look like yellow lady bugs? http://attra.ncat.org/attra-pub/cucumberbeetle.html#Species
So sorry, please see if you can get a better picture of one, meanwhile a verbal description would be helpful.
It might be helpful to post the new picture and info in Garden Foe also.
Did it come in with the storm? I had beetles and grasshoppers to appear right after the storms from Dennis. I don't know if they rode the wind or if the moisture caused them to hatch.
Judy
Badseed, they do have brown spots, but also have long legs and antenna.
Chele, I think you are onto something!!
I second the expletives LOL
Doris, I am being plagued too, as my area is pretty similar to yours.
My big problem now are these buggers leaving holes, and thrips ... which are turning the growing points of three of mine into brown, curled leaves. I still have to fight the spider mites too, and very little rain. My dh thinks that I am nutty to hang on to these babies, but I can't help myself.
I really feel for ya.
Those are the same kind of cucumber beetles that I have. I see them everywhere. At nurseries, on my walks, wherever there is green. They must be just all over!! I squish them also. They have this instinct to just drop straight down if you bother them so they can get away easily unless you are careful. I squish them and leave them on the plant as a warning. I swear this helps. I do not have that many as in past years.
kareoke - we posted at the same time, pls read my posting. TU
Doris, your pic looks just like the cucumber beetles that we have here. I hate them too. But DH has been spraying for mosquitos every weekend and I haven't seen any since he started spraying. (Haven't seen any good bugs either.....darn :(
They are chewing up everything in site! This must be a bad bug year. It started with spittle and mealy bugs, then spider mites on one brug and now there are cucumber beetles on everything. Then I notice there are squash bugs sexing all over my gourds! Eewwwww. I am thrilled every time I see a lady bug, spider or mantis!
do you have a plague of them? I've seen a couple of this kind of bug in my yard, but haven't notice an inordinate amount of damage. Very frustrating to work so hard only to have critters munch away, you get penalized for being good! does that make sense?????

I'm a little disgusted by them. LOL They are actually a bit *messy*. Eeeeewwww!!! Susie actually cracked up when I told her one poked my finger once! It hurt too and she laughed! The kids keep pointing them out to me and I have to keep smashing them. Geesh!
I smoosh away, and I think they are the cucumber beatle, I haven't that many YET, but keep an avid eye on them!
Chele, that is your problem, you haven't trained your little girl army to not only seek but to destroy too. No bugs would have a chance.
Doris so sorry something got mine good now the seedlings i'm going to get down sit next to them look close see what i can see. bad. i had small green was pretty green grasshopper on one so small.. and a brownish bug could see.. but this morning more leaves ate on seedlings.. Put the kids on army detail .. no plant bugs detail... Doris hope thats end of them for you.. i mean for the BUGS
These bugs fly off when you get close, I doubt if they are the same as your bugs.
Judy I will do that, thank you.
I used Sevin powder on Thurs for holes in my Brugs; I put a TBL in the toe of old panty hose, and shook all around them.
(5% Sevin is the least toxic of chemicals - people use it on animals - not me!)

Hey...I just talked to a Nurseryman here who told me he has found Imidocloprid acts like Viagra for mites. EEEEEK. Perhaps because the bugs ARE eating them AND the leaves/flowers! I would suggest Imidocloprid for your beetles...but....
There is a kewl devise I just bought...spendy for plastic...where you fill the long tube with insecticide like powdered Sevin and then you can pump it out under the leaves...like the old fashioned flysprayers.
Thanks Carol, I just sprayed my whole yard with "CUTTER" Bug Free backyard, it attaches to your hose, it says it is very powerfull, I sure hope it works.
Doris
I bet it works Doris, that is what DH has been using.
