tropicals...check it out!!

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

Hi everyone! Not sure how many states have Meijer Stores...but for the ones that do...I just returned from one..and all their tropicals were on sale for 4.59! Lots of Musa bajoo bananas...curcumbas, heliconia, colocasia, alocasia...and maybe some others too. All were in gallon pots. I wish I had room to buy more!!!

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Lucky you! Those are steal prices....sigh...lol.
:) Donna

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

great prices-we don't have any stores that sell that great selection of plant. Lucky you!!!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Really?? I rarely go to Meijer unless I am after a certain thing. Did you find them in the houseplant section or out in the nursery? You are so bad!

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

LOL Badseed! They were out in the nursery. I couldnt believe my eyes!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Yeah, well, I am trying to cover my eyes and ears! Guess I could run to Eastgate while hubby is at work. LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Run Chele run!! I sure would pick up a few heliconia, I have been dying to try them. And maybe a few other things too. LOL

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Man, I was right there at Eastgate a month ago, wish they had the sale then, I would have bought an exra suitcase to bring some home!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I've never even heard of that store but I WANNA GO TOO!!!!!!!!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I am sure Marcia was not at the Eastgate store but it is the closest to me. LOL Oh yeah and the one on Ridge.... Wonder if I'll get lucky?? Anybody want to email me a phone number just in case? LOL

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Weeeellll, I just sunk $51 at Meijers! LOL I grabbed 2 ears, 2 heliconia, a hedychium, a hem I didn't have, and awesome mixed put with a huge upright ear I didn't have and other mixed trops, grabbed another zebra banana and some others. I'll post a pic after I get a baby-ectomy. :)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Okay, just looked. I also got a Syngonium and a couple of Curcuma. LOL Now what the heck am I going to do with all of them? I may have to go see what they have at the other store. ;) Thanks Marcy troublemaker!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

We want to see them. Gosh so much for $51.

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

Yeah, Michelle..let's see them!! Sounds like your store had a better selection than mine..The store I went to was in Richmond, IN. I just have NO MORE ROOM..or I would have bought a lot more than one banana...LOL!!

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

"Now what the heck am I going to do with all of them?"

DOH, send them to Calif for overwintering of course! Kell and I will volunteer space, after all, we have so much room left! Right Kell?!! LOL

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

LOL Calif_Sue!! I wish I could do that!!! Well actually...I wish I had a greenhouse where I could overwinter them!!!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL Sue! I thought you might be able to find a few square inches to help me out!

Some Californian sent back into the battlefield! That store didn't have quite as much but I did walk out with an Alocasia plumbae 'Nigra', a variegated Curcuma another Heliconia for that CA person and a big Anthurium. :)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Here is the planter that was marked down to $15 but I got it for $7.50! I think that is an A.p. "metallica" in the center and a bunch of other plants in it.

This one is marked Curcuma australasica 'Aussie Plume'. I have not checked online to see if it is correct but it sure is pretty! I also got C. elata but it is not in bloom.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Wow you made a haul. They look like nice plants.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

At $4 a plant, I do not think there was any way to go wrong. LOL

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

What a haul Michelle!! And 4.00 a plant???? Man..I got gypped...lol! I paid 5 something a plant! But then..I only got one!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

YOU ONLY GOT ONE??? You sent me in there, with baited breath and a credit card and NOW you tell me you only got one?? ROTFLOL I think you owe me half for making me go shopping. :)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Really Chele, Marcy set you up so she could live vicariously!!! I bet her DH won't be mad at her tonite. LOL

Hey, I think that Californian says GO BACK again for another variegated Curcuma, and the A.p. 'nigra'. FAST!!!!! LOL LOL

I thought these were supposed to be 4 in potted plants. They are in gallon cans and just huge!!!!!! I bet some Californian somewhere will be real happy. Lucky duck.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

What Californian????????

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I thought it was you, Sue. I was going to say grow them and share. LOL

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

ROTFLOL Kell! You are such a trouble maker!

Hubby was with me when I bought the bulk of them and he just laughed. I could have $1 in the bank and tell in there was a pack of seeds I wanted and he would tell me to buy them. Of course I am the one that pays the bills. LOL

They didn't have any more of the varie Curcurma but they did have one more Metallica. Should I go back? :)

And can anyone tell me how to mail the Heliconia? Do I need to send it completely potted or can it go bare root?

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

LOL Michele!! WELLLLLLL..my hubby was along too..and he just kept saying...where are you gonna put any more plants????? Soooooo..seeee...I thought since YOU had the greenhouse...better you than me!!!
Kell...you were sooo right! Hubby didn't get mad...lol!!!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I have a word for people like you. ENABLER! LOL Anyway, I'll enjoy them as will my CA friend. LOL

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

What variety of heliconias were they?

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Not me Kell, and I thought it was you! Why can't we find sales like that here?
If you are sending it to a Californian, no dirt is the best way, otherwise it may hang up in the AG dept. if their doggie decides to sniff it out.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

They aren't marked. It is either the case of people pulling them or they were never in the pots. The outsides of the pots have stickers with the plant type.

Will they be alright travelling bare root?

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Hmm, don't know. My last bananas shipped with a bit of dirt but it was from a nursery, maybe in a small bit of moist peat they would do good.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

wrap the roots in damp shagnum moss and put in a plastic bag tied shut to hold the moisture in. :-)

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Do you have shredded paper Chele? the kind from a shredding machine in an office? Dampen it a bit(not soggy), then pack the roots in it.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Thanks much you two! Someone will like these plants much better if they arrive alive. LOL
