Well the new Alocasia macrorrhiza are finally here.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Finally is only subjective.
Actually the new additions from Enid got here VERY quickly AND in incredibly good shape.

Thanks to all for the shots and recommendations.
I was pretty blown away by the quality (growing AND packing) and the size of these little monsters.
I hate to tell you what I paid locally three years ago for my A. odera of half this size. lol

This shot is 10 minutes out of the box.
Those are 32 gallon trash cans for scale.

May I present 'New Guinea Gold" and "Lutea".

Check out the root ball on this one.
There are a pair of kitchen shear on the left side of the shelf (which is 27" wide) for scale.

You ear shopped without me???? Awesome ears!

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

The second shot is the NGG after unwrapping.
I had to immediately up the pot size I was planning to use.
The "Lutea" came potted but will have to go up also.

Sorry Chele.
I knew you were house hunting......
I do though have a pup of a different species getting ready to become your house warming gift....lol

Where did you get those humongous ears? Anything I've ever bought I've been disappointed hugely in, because they are so small and so expensive. I'd love to have some different varieties of Alocasia. If you are not allowed to tell, please email me privately.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL Ric! I had my eyeballs on the Lutea too after seeing that post.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Pssssst, look on here! I want that Xanthosoma maffata and a few others. LOL http://www.landsendtexotics.co.nz/ban.shtml

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

I wasn't sure if I could link to 'Natural Selections Exotics' due to the rules here.
But as Chele has put up a link.........lol

henry10, i was wanting to know name of small next to lutea, or is it another lutea

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

The smaller (though that's QUITE relative. lol) is A. 'New Guinea Gold" .
It's been potted up now and starting to uncurl.

Ric

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

So far as I know, you can link to other sites. You may not link to your own site or member sites for gain.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Fabulous. I was wondering which one was tougher, the lutea or the NG Gold. On, what do I care, I want them both!

You did great!

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

I ordered again from them.

ALOCASIA ADVINCULA and (shhhhh......on sale)
ALOCASIA MACRORHIZA 'BORNEO GIANT'.

Ric

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I got my partial shipment on Monday from Enid. I have the A. 'New Guinea Gold coming, she ran out of them momentarily! She said she had a rush on them, I wonder why!! LOL Yours are incredible, Ric.

I got 3 gingers. They were in 4 inch pots. 2 look good but C.Arabicus Variegata is pretty beaten up from the trip. Most of the top is broken off, does anyone know if I can root the little pieces?

I sent a link to this and the other thread to Enid.
She said she was wondering where all the Alocasia orders were coming from all the sudden....lol.

I just received a notice that my next order is shipping.
Oh Boy!

kell,
most costus you can root. just stick them in the ground, water often, and in a month you should see something like a bump on the side. costus will root just some you have to do them at the right time, and some you have to push over into a bucket. and put a brick on it... =) don't worry if the tops of them turn brown.....

ely

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Thanks Ely. I usually bag my good brugs to root, should I bag them? The tops are already turning brown. LOL! I don't have to wait. They are still slightly attached so still alive. The leaves must be so tender for it really looks terrible.

Well, I can blame this post for my getting this nice 'Lutea' from Enid today. I am so impressed with their size and like Ric said, the fast delivery and packaging.

My puppy Penny checking it out.

I can't stand it. NO NO NO

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Hey no fair!
We didn't get a stuffed animal.

Ric

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

That IS a sweet looking plant!

Ours got hit by a freak wind storm we had recently.
The two outer leaves were snapped off at the base.
They did though have roots so.......................

The rest of the plant is doing fine.
It has two new leaves so looks the same as in the first shot.

ALL 4 of the new plants from Enid have thrown at least one new leaf now.
(Even the Nrew Gunia which arrived bare root.)

Ric, you have yours potted? I am so new to these I am nervous about potting in the wrong soil.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Yes Sue.
This late in the year here pots are the only way we can go.
By mid late Sept we will have to be bringing them in.

I just try to match what they came in.

Alocasia we grow in an almost orchid mix.
Small orchid bark, a lot of compost, some top soil, perlite, etc.
You want the soil to drain very quickly so the crown isn't sitting in water long.

Out there I'm assuming you have very sandy soil?
So ammend w/ compost.

What are the low Winter temps like there?

Ric

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Sandy? No way..CLAY!
Our average low rarely gets below 38-39 in Jan. Chele sent me some ears last fall that I overwintered in a big container of pure peatmoss and they were happy campers. I think I will repot my big As with a more appropiate mix to prepare them for the upcoming colder months.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Clay?
Well in that case welcome to our world! lol

I've found a good mix is 1 part clay, 1 part good draining top soil, 1 part composted manure and 1 part peat.

Then I grow Colocasia in it for a season. Just regular old EE's from Lowes, etc...

Come Spring that used soil + pure leaf loam makes a great Alo and Xanth soil the next year.

For some reason growing Colocasia for a year in the first mix breaks it down into the most incredible friable soil I've ever seen. It just crumbles in your hands and drains well.

Ric
