Need Plants

Peoria, IL(Zone 5a)

I am new to gardening but would like to get aggresive with it. My husband is on disability and is home all of the time his favorite color is burgundy. I really don't have anything to trade but would be willing to pay for plants enjoyable for my husband to look at when he isn't feeling well. He has M.S andCHF. Any advise on gadening would be great?

I can send you the standard oldtime blue Siberian irises if you want to send me the $7.70 for the big box, first. You can see the feedback on me and please let me know.

Celina, TN(Zone 6b)

I can send you 8/10 lavender Iris if you will send a $3.85 postage stamp[no money please].
I am disabled and don't get to the post office
often. Edited to say I have pic if you would like to see the Iris.

You can find some great deals at Lowes if you have one near you on the clearance racks.
Usually all they need is water and a bit of trimming. I've gotten tons of large plants there for like .25-1.00 each and they've all come around. Great way to get started and cheaper than postage.

I have some perennial seeds I will send you for free if you will just send your address. If you put them in this fall, you will have plants/flowers in the spring.

I have an abundance of liatris (purple) both seeds and seedlings I also have some rudbeckia (indian summer) - large flowers! I have seeds and small seedlings as well of the rudbeckia. I also have a few hibiscus seeds that I didn't get a chance to plant this spring - I harvested them last fall. I'd be happy to send, any or all, of them for either postage or SASE.

Send me your address and a note and I will send you some plants. Shirley

I can also send you some hydrangea cuttings and baby rooted buttercups, if you would like.

Babydoll,

I have gazillions of "Rose Campion" seeds, if you're interested. If you're not familiar, they're listed in the plant files. They'll come up next season if planted this summer/fall. Just let me know.

Thanks for the seeds

I don't want to make promises until I actually harvest seeds from these plants, but I should be able to send you seeds this fall from some annuals with nice burgundy/purple color in their foliage. I'm growing 'Purple Majesty' millet, an entirely burgundy amaranthus lividus, and 'Flamingo Flower' celosia. If you have a sunny window for a couple of overwintered pots, I could also send you cuttings of a burgundy leaved trailing coleus (just take cuttings to root in water in the spring). I sent cuttings this spring in a bubble envelope, and they seemed to travel fine that way when the weather wasn't so hot. Please Dmail me next month to remind me if you're interested.

Babydoll,
Just list your Address and you will get some seeds, and things from me as well. I also have MS and it is a very hard disease to live with daily! Good luck to you and your husband!

Hi Linda,

Another idea, you might drive by a few homes growing Iris.
All too often there are older homes with patches that sure
could use dividing. You could offer to divide and replant
the Iris for the extras.

If someone showed up and offered to work
for plants around here, I would sure consider take them up on it.

:-)

P.S. Not a good idea to post your address. Dmail is private
and that way you won't expose yourself.

Guys, this post was in 2005, is LInda still a member? Just thought I would point that out..I never heard back from her either.

LOL, I didn't even notice Susie R's post was in response
to a two year old post
until you said that.

Too funny.

Springfield, IL(Zone 6a)

Beginner's cluelessness for that one, thus the "oops!"

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Ah, many of us have done it.

:-)

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Yes we have! Me included!

Wuvie,
I have stopped and offered to weed in exchange for a flower start. I figure it never hurts to ask! Budgielover (from 2005!), I can see that I have been missing a great opportunity by not checking out the distressed plants at Lowes! Thanks for the info!
Pat

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Some of the Lowes around here have change their policies and are not reducing the plants as much as they used to but you can still get good deals are some of the more unusual plants. I found 2 mahonia (leatherleaf figs) in 4 gal pots for $4.00 each. Checking the internet, I found some in 1 gal pots for like $30-40 each. They were turning brown from lack of water and attention but are recovering nicely.

One summer, on the nastiest, stickiest, ickiest day, we stopped
by a store we shall not name and asked how much for ALL of the
plants which were sweltering in the heat. Once the store manager
was found, we quoted him a price. A bit of haggling, and we drove
off with the entire parking lot in our truck, brimming with plants.

Forty bucks. The employees didn't know how to care for the plants
anyhow.

We ended up with seven big quince

And a ton of other things. Even the things which had succumbed
to the heat were at least worth the soil and the pots, many of which
were not the cheap style. Hanging baskets and so much more.

Hubby mentioned it was around July 4th, so be on the lookout for
stores with a mess of plants left to sell.

Our Kroger is like that. The employees don't water. So they put whatever they have on half price. I've gotten a lot of pretty hibiscus, and kalanchoe that way.

superthive will bring anything back from near death

Peoria, IL(Zone 5a)

I am still around.

San Antonio, TX

Hedersatx is superthrive the brand name of the life giver? Is it liquid or powder?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

SuperThrive is a liquid concentrate. It comes in little bottles with "snake oil" packaging LOL... see http://www.superthrive.com/page1.htm YMMV, but lots of folks have reported great results with it, especially when it comes to reviving cuttings or bare root plants.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Linda,

Glad you popped in, we've been talking to your two year old post, LOL.

So, did you end up trading for plants, working for plants, do tell how
your garden grew. :-)

HI --i sent you a bunch of purple millet seeds--i planted a bunch at the same time---dont fret if they only look like grass--mine are six inches tall and look like green grass except the centers are starting to look darker--soon they will start turing purple tho--the more sun the better--i mass planted them in a ten foot long foot wide area and they all sprouted--------the striped corn i sent you might have done better than i expected as there was one seed of corn in with my millet and with only one seed it came up as a very nicely striped white corn plant --usually a bunch arent striped and some are so u plant thick then thin out the unstriped ones---the millet will be turnin purple tho -----stevo

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

Tropicana, I was thinking about you today! What a coincidence, on a two year old thread (I was all ready to send plants and seeds, too). That heuchera sure sounds interesting to me...I have one clump from a trade, but can see I will want more, especially if it's going to get tossed.
