I'll send out a SASE to ya tonight! I was actually looking for ANY type hibiscus last night and didn't have any luck!

Any pointers for me concerning how to start this?? I"m a newbie :)

Shoot...I just threw it on the ground...and in the past 3 years it has multiplied and has filled the corner of my flower bed. They are super easy to grow. I have been sharing seeds with friends and family and even strangers for the past 2 years. It is a wonderful flower that requires NO special care. You will LOVE IT!!!!

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 9a)

Sue, I will get the SASBE out to you. I just love the way this looks.

Em,
Are you wanting just seeds or do you want plants. I have some strays popping up in the yard. Not sure which colors they will be. I can snatch some up Tuesday and mail them to you for postage, if you want to be surprised. If you click on my name, it will take you to my journal. It has pics of the ones I have, so you will have a clue as to what you MIGHT get.

BRIARROSE... I have no idea. I have been looking for a name for it for about 2 years now. Someone on the identification thread found it and sent it to me. Personally, I have never thought about eating any of it...but the Japanese Beetles love it..LOL

KATHY-ANN... Again, I have no idea. I am not a plant expert. As a matter of fact I am real new to Hort. names. I have grown plants for many many years, but names have never been important to me. I just plant, grow, and share with folks who like them too. Sorry I can't help.

Floyd, VA(Zone 7a)

iamakylady53 - hey, sorry I missed your post until now. I already sent the SASE out so feel free to share your plants with another lucky individual! But definitely thanks for the offer. Besides, if I can get these seeds to wrok for me inside for a bit, I can at least try to find a place to put it in a flower bed outside ;) LOL!

I think this is "Abelmoschus Manihot" hibiscus.. the pods are edible, taste like okra..

Larkie

Mine is the same, except mine has the burgandy center.. Does yours? Can't tell from the pic..

I think your right Larkie, I have the true roselle hibiscus growing out side, flower is somewhat the same, but the leaves and stems are diff than theone in this picture. I didn't realize the manihot was edible , that's neat. Makes sense that it would taste like okra, since it's in the okra family. The almost unopened flowers are edible on mine and make a great tea that I'll soon be trying out.

Springville, AL(Zone 7a)

LARKIE...Yes they do have a burgandy center. WOW...have you eaten them? I will have to pass this info along to my Mom...she loves Okra!!
Thanks so much for the info!!

blckwolf256 - so those are the pods right? The seeds aren't that big are they? If so, I may have sent quite the unadequate envelope!!!!!!! If so, let me know and I can resend a more appropriate one and shipping :)

Springville, AL(Zone 7a)

302LADY...The pods are about1 1/2" long...some are a little longer..some a little shorter...but I have cleaned them up and only send the seeds.
I have found it doesn't hurt so bad if I wear rubber gloves to gather the seeds , and I would hate to be mean to folks recieving the seeds by sending the sticky pods...lol
Your envie should be fine.

Springville, AL(Zone 7a)

302lady...your envie arrived, and will be heading out in the morning!!
